Husky golfers fourth at Newport

Sweet Home qualified two golfers for the state 4A tournament from the district tournament held Monday at Emerald May 10, at Emerald Valley in Cottage Grove.

Late results showed Carsen Perry and Joseph Hiemenz as state qualifiers after the Huskies placed third out of six teams.

Woodburn as the district champion behind individual champion Cole Byere (75), with a 356, followed by Cascade (360), Sweet Home (426), Sisters (454), Newport (464) and Stayton (477).

For Sweet Home, Perry finished with his lowest round of the year, shooting 94, followed by Hiemenz with a 101. Morgan Sands had a 113, and Dakota Melkvik finished with 118. Freshman Chet Garrett had a 136.

Coach Ron Wood said the 4A State Showcase will be held Tuesday, May 18, at Trysting Tree in Corvallis.

The Sweet Home girls were scheduled to play in the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 3 championsip held May 10-11 at Rogue Valley Country Club. Results were unavailable at press time.

Newport Invitational

Sweet Home’s boys finished fourth out of five teams at the Newport High School Invitational held May 5 at Salishan in Gleneden Beach.

Carsen Perry led the Huskies with a 103, which was good for a three-way tie for 11th in a field of 37 players.

Morgan Sands finished with a 105, good for 15th, followed by Deakota Melkvik (109), Joseph Hiemenz (110), and Chet Garrett (113).

Woodburn finished first in the team competition with a 339, behind individual medalists Cole Beyer and Ty Beyer, who both shot two-over-par 72s. Cascade was second (358), followed by Cottage Grove (394), Sweet Home (427) and Newport (452). Sisters, Waldport and Stayton also had golfers in the event, but did not have enough players to score as a team.
