Sweet Home’s swimmers got to show off their stuff Thursday in their first home meet of the season, and what a display it was.
Hosting district rivals Philomath, Stayton, Central and Cascade, the Huskies set a girls school record in the 200 Freestyle Relay and won 10 of 11 events, while the boys won six events as every boy posted a personal best time in at least one event.
“You know you’ve had a pretty good meet when every boy on your team has a PR and your girls break a school record,” Coach Doug Peargin said.
The girls dominated the meet, outscoring second-place Stayton 130-102, starting with a 2:00.8 in the opening event, the 200 Medley Relay, in which sophmores Makayla Nelson and Esther Gunselman teamed with freshmen Jessica Coats and Lucie Davis to finish in 2:00.84, which would have been seventh, by 1/100th of a second, at last year’s state championships.
Davis (200 and 100 freestyles), Nelson (200 IM and 500 Freestyle) and Gunselman (100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke) each won two individual events and helped win two relays each.
“I think Lucie had the best meet with big swims in the 100 and 200 frees,” Peargins said. Davis’ time of 1:58.40 would have won last year’s state championship and was the second-fastest ever swum by a Husky, behind Rachel Ahola’s 1:56.00.
He noted that the 11 of the other 12 girls on the team posted PR’s in at least one event.
On the boys side, Philomath finished ahead of the Huskies 106-88, but the Warriors’ depth was their winning edge as Sweet Home finished first in six of the 11th events, but didn’t have the swimmers to fill in much below the top slots in each race. Plus, the Huskies were disqualified in the 200 Freestyle Relay, losing some big points there.
“Our biggest enemy is lack of depth,” Peargin said. “That kept us from winning the meet. We only have nine boys on the team, but all nine of them had lifetime bests in at least one event.”
Freshman Brandon Vasfaret won the 200 IM and 100 Freestyle to lead the boys, with other individual wins coming from Jaeger Howatt in the 50 Freestyle and freshman Nathan Hager in the 200 Freestyle.
“We’re still improving but we have a long way to go,” Peargin said. “But with only two seniors on the team, for as young as they are, the kids did a pretty good job.”
Sweet Home will make up an earlier scheduled meet with Blanchet, which was postponed earlier due to snow, at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at home.
