Kambria Schumacher of Crawfordsville placed 22nd in her division of 54 competitors in the U.S. Triathlon Age Group Olympic Distance National Championships in Burlington, Vt.
Schumacher finished in 2:26:14, well behind the women’s winner, Haley Chura, who finished in 2:05.40. Schumacher was the second finisher among Oregon women, behind Ann Davidson of Portland who finished in 2:18:13. Overall, she was 793rd out of 1,989 competitors.
“The race didn’t go as well as I hoped,” said Schumacher, 24. “But it was fun.”
She said she had difficulty during the swim portion, in which the water was wind-whipped and choppy.
“It definitely was a different experience,” she said.
On the 10K run, she said she felt “pretty good” but that her time didn’t reflect that as she finished in 42:22.1. Her bike time was 1:12.30 over the 40-kilometer course and her swim time for 1.5 kilometers was 28:30.
Schumacher said she plans to defend her women’s title in the Best in the West Triathlon on Sept. 8 at Lewis Creek Park on Foster Lake and finish her season with the Olympic distance competition at the Portland Triathlon on Sept. 23.
