Huskies 2nd in Sky-Em softball; host Stayton Friday

The Huskies finished the regular season in softball losing 3-0 on the road against Junction City on Friday, but they held onto their second-place finish with an 11-4 regular season record.

They defeated Cottage Grove 3-0 at home on May 8.

Elmira finished in first with 15-0 record. Junction City is third, 10-5.

The Huskies will host Stayton at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in their state playoffs play-in game. In the meantime, the Huskies were planning a couple of tune-up games, one against Lebanon Monday and another against Cascade on Tuesday.

“Stayton’s a very good squad,” said Coach Casey Humphrey. “They knocked us off last year, but we feel good about this squad. We got them once. There’s no doubt in my mind and the girls’ minds we can go out and get them again.”

Junction City 3, Sweet Home 0

Junction City scored three runs in the first inning, and then no one scored again.

“We didn’t look very good early on, and then we were trying to play catchup – always tough to do against a decent squad,” Humphrey said.

At bat, Katie Virtue and Hailey Hummer went 1-3, and Emili Riggs went 1-3 with a double.

Emily Marchbanks pitched the game, giving up three runs and six hits on one double. She gave up three walks and hit two batters, while striking out eight.
