Annie Whitfield was the lone winner for the Sweet Home track teams Saturday at the Meet of Champions, but some other Huskies put on a good show.
Whitfield got off one “decent” throw in the javelin, Snow said, 132-2, but it was enough to hold off the rest of the field and defend her MOC title.
The meet, held at Willamette University, featured some of the top 1A through 4A division athletes in Oregon, from 54 schools.
“It was a good meet and I thought we had a pretty good day,” said Coach Billy Snow, who is one of the organizers. “The meet went well and that’s always good when you put it on.
“We had a lot of PRs and the ones that weren’t PRs were stinking close. We had some big races by kids.”
Among the top performances were Jake Johnson’s second place in the discus with a throw of 147-9, a 7-foot PR and only 6 feet off Matt Slauson’s school record, set in 2003 and good for fourth in the state 4A rankings as of Monday.

Freshmen India Porter, in the 400 (1:04.80) and Jordan Miller in the 800 (2:34.06) got a taste of the big time and responded with personal bests of a second and a half and four seconds, respectively.
Nicole Rasmussen posted a 16-second PR in the 3000 (11:08.02) but finished second behind Scappoose’s Tia Carnahan after Carnahan built up too big of a lead and Rasmussen, despite a furious kick at the end, coudln’t catch her, losing by three seconds.
Freshman Jakob Hiett posted an 8-second PR in the 1500 (4:16.70) and Daniel Danforth posted his own 8-second personal best in the 3000 (9:25.05) as both finished eighth.
Other PRs came from Chace Hutchins in the 300 hurdles (46.09) and Nick Hall in the 800 (2:01.08), a three-second personal best in his third race at that distance this season.
“It was a good meet. I thought we had a pretty good day,” Snow said.
This week the Huskies host the entire Sky-Em League with the exception of Junction City on Wednesday at 4 p.m., then travel to Lebanon Friday for the Rob Allen Invitational on the Warriors’ brand new track, a meet that will bring together 6A teams North Salem and Sprague, 5A schools Bend, Dallas, South Albany and Lebanon, and 4A foe Elmira along with Sweet Home. Field events start at 4:30 p.m.

Sweet Home traveled to La Pine Wednesday, April 25, for a tour-way meet with Sky-Em teams Sisters and Elmira, along with the host Hawks, some Mountain View athletes and 1A Gilchrist.
Most of Sweet Home’s top athletes stayed home to prepare for the Meet of Champions, which left the Huskies at a loss for big scoring.
