Huskies host Jefferson and Scio in

Coach Billy Snow

For The New Era

In their initial foray in the 2005 track season, the Husky tracksters hosted the Scio Loggers and Jefferson in a non scoring meet. We are a very young and inexperienced team as a whole. We have a small group of experienced varsity kids but the bulk of our team was seeing their first action of high school track and field.

Looking over the results, our veteran kids were at or near where they left off last year which is always a good sign. If they can build from there, and we fill the gaps with the new faces, we’ll be OK as a team. Our challenge is that there are a lot of gaps to fill and we have a limited number of meets to look at kids in different areas and event. Our early meets will be designed to allow us to look at the maximum number f kids in the most events that we can.

BOYS:

Had we scored the meet, Jefferson would have topped us by 10 pints with Scio trailing. As for the returning vets, Phil DeLong had a great start to the year with a lifetime PR in the discus of 110-11 for second and taking the shot at 39-04.5. Phil has been nursing a twisted ankle and if he can do this injured, we can’t wait for him to get back to full strength. Alex Brown had a big throw in the jav, going 150-10 for the win there. Alex has really stepped it up this year and has moved into a position to contest this event in most meets. Jeremy Fisher had a solid time of 18.44a in the high hurdles for second which is just shy of his best time last year. Kellen Petersen was a triple placer, taking third in the long jump (18-00), second in the triple jump (37-05), fourth in the 100M (12.1). Peter VanDerlip was a double placer in the distance events going 4.53.2 in the 1500M for second and 10.41.1 in the 3000M for second.

Ryan Sipe had a solid 58.20a in the 400M for third. Anthony Ertsgaard ran 4.59.3 in the 1500M for third and KC Hanscam was fourth in the 3000M in 11:57.2. Nathan Whitfield had a pair of fourth places, 34-05.5 in the shot and 124-03 in the javelin. Sawyer Anderson (9-00) and Ole Bond (8-06) took second and third respectively in the pole vault. Ole also had an eye opening 24.8 in the 200M to take third overall

As for the new faces on the block, we saw a lot of good things. Ravi Patel had a solid start with win the triple jump at 38-05.5 and a second in the long jump at 18-01.5. Tim Faulconer will be a force to be reckoned with a win in the 400M in 55.89a and came back to take fourth in the 200M (25.1). Frosh Ramiro Santana ran a solid time for a frosh (58.70a) but did not place. In the 800M, Isaac Villarreal led the 800M for æ of the race before tiring and finishing third behind frosh Dallin Holden who was second.

In the relays, the 4 X 100 team of Ryan Sipe, Tim Faulconer, Ramiro Santana, and Kellen Petersen finished second. The 4 X 4 team of Faulconer, Santana, Sipe, and Alex Ritzman ran 3.53.0 for the win with the team of Anthony Erstgaard, Dallin Holden, Ole Bond, and Jason Long right behind at 3.54.7.

GIRLS:

On the girls side, had we scored the meet, Sweet Home would have won by 20 points over Scio with Jefferson another 10 back. Again our vets led the way.

Krystle Streight opened in good fashion, winning the shot at 37-0, taking second in the discus at 109-03 and going second in the jav at 99-09. Hannah McClaskey chipped in with places in the shot (third / 30-09) and discus (86-04 / fourth). Kari McGuyre, out after a year’s hiatus, won two events, the high jump in a solid 4-10 and the long jump at 13-10. Nicki Emmert teamed up with Kari for a good 1-2 punch in the horizontal jumps, taking first in the triple at 30-05 and second in the long jump at 13-09.5. Erika Snow added places in the triple (second at 26-02) and the pole vault (third at 6-00). Lastly, frosh Kelsey Agee, stepped up at took fourth in the pole vault at 6-00 in her first HS meet.

On the track, all our individual placings came from new faces except for Julia Henthorne’s fourth place finish in the 800M. Sisters Devynn Schumacher (5:39.5) and Kambria Schumacher (5:52.5) teamed up to taek first and thrid respectively in the 1500M. Not to be outdone, sister Cassandra Schumacher won the 3000M in 12:56.7. In the 800M, frosh Ashley Danielson led a 2-3-4 finish for Sweet Home with a time of 2:42.6. Tabby Trahan was third in 2:47.4 with Henthorne following close behind. Heidi Wilson took fourth in the 3000M with a time of 15:08.3.

In the sprints, Kierya Shreves took second in the 100M at 14.3 with frosh Michelle Buhn right behind at 14.4.

This twosome tied for third in the 200M at 30.7. Frosh Kyla Friesen Gregory took second in the high hurdles. Although neither relay placed, the times were good for early season and in neither race did we have our best four together. The long relay team of K. Schumacher, T. Trahan, Snow and Danielson ran a solid 4:44.3 which is not far from what we ran at districts last year.
