Lebanon junior Sierra Miller finished 14th as an individual in the District 2 regional girls golf tournament held Monday and Tuesday, May 11-12, at Mallard Creek, just missing a trip to state.

Miller, who was the only Warrior girl to qualify for the regional, struggled on Day 1, finishing with an uncharacteristically high 110, before shooting 90 on Day 2 to finish with an overall score of 200.

She was one of two individual qualifiers, along with Woodburn’s Emma Puente, who finished third (94-91-185) for the tournament.

Coach Bart Baldwin noted that Miller was the first player to tee off on Day 1.

“There were some nerves and she had a tough first nine holes,” he said. “Then she bounced back and played really well.

“She played so well she raced back up the leaderboard and missed qualifying for state by one stroke.”

Crater won the event, shooting 377-369-746, ahead of the Mid-Willamette Conference’s Silverton (418-391-809), West Albany (418-398-816) and Corvallis (410-409-819). The Comets’ Halle Shore was the individual champion (85-82-167).

The Warriors’ Sam Tunstill did not compete in the boys tournament, also held May 11-22 at Mallard Creek, but he plays this week in the 5A Boys State Tournament  Monday and Tuesday, May 18-19, at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River. Tunstill was chosen as one of the MWC’s individual representatives in the state tournament after the Warriors missed qualifying for the boys district/regionals as a team.
