“Is your life out of control? Do people take advantage of you? Do you have trouble saying no? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you will appreciate this.
“Boundaries” by Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend, will be presented in a nine-week class, starting October 4, at the Sweet Home Seventh-day Adventist Church. The class will be facilitated by local leaders in the boundaries materials, including Caroline Johnson, BSN, Becki Knobloch, MPH, and Les Luton, BS.
Subtitled “When to Say YES, When to Say No, To Take control of Your Life,” the concept of boundaries encompasses emotional and mental and spiritual safeguards to keep us responsible for ourselves. Clear boundaries are essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not.
As people, we sometimes focus so much on being loving and unselfish that we forget our own limits and limitations. The class will help us learn healthy and legitimate boundaries.
Cloud and Townsend are well known psychologists with wide appeal to the general public. Their books on Boundaries have been best sellers since first published in 1992 and will be used as the basis for the class. In addition, their videos will be included in the class format as a springboard for group discussion.
Class materials will cost money. Participants can choose which materials they will purchase, depending on how much time and money and effort they choose to put into the class. The first session will be an overview to motivate active participation, with explanation of available materials and costs. However, we do not want costs to be a barrier to anyone wishing to attend.
A light supper will be served at 6 p.m.. The 1 1/2 hour class will begin by 6:30. Child care will be provided for 3 – 12 year olds in an adjoining room. Christian videos will be available for them, with competent supervision.
