Sweet Home lost three softball games last week, 7-2 to Stayton and 4-3 and 5-3 to Marshfield, but the young team is learning from it and moving forward.
“We just overlooked Stayton,” said Coach Shane Cochran. “And we’ll try not to do that any more. Marshfield is pretty good. They’ve got a pretty good pitcher and a few good hitters.
“We played good enough to win. We just didn’t string enough hits together to score runs.
“I’m not disappointed. It’s all good. We’re young. We’ve got a lot learn. We’ve just got to keep moving forward, do what we need to do.”
At home against Stayton on March 30, the Huskies scored first in the third inning. Sunhee Bitter hit a single, and Sarita Zanona singled to bring Bitter home.
Stayton took the lead in the top of the fourth, 2-1, and held on for the win, scoring four more in the fifth and one in the sixth, while Sweet Home scored just once more in the fifth inning.
Bitter collected one more hit. Britney Zook had two hits, including a double, and Marissa Kurtz had one.
Sarah Vantlyning led at bat for Stayton, going 3-4 with an RBI.
Brianna Hoffman pitched four innings and one out, giving up four hits, six walks and six runs, one unearned, while striking out six batters.
Pitching in relief, Ally Tow gave up two hits, a walk and a run and struck out one batter.
For Stayton, Kelsie Walker gave up six hits, a walk and two runs and struck out five.
The Huskies were scheduled to open league play at Elmira on Monday. They host
Sisters on Wednesday and Sutherlin on Friday.

In the first game of a doubleheader at Marshfield on Saturday, the Huskies lost 4-3.
Marshfield built a 4-0 lead, scoring in the second inning, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth before the Huskies scored three in a sixth-inning rally.
Zanona singled to right field to score Bitter, who reached base on a single to right field. Zook and Zanona scored on errors. Kennedi Waldrop hit a double.
Savannha Williams went 1-2 with two RBIs to lead at bat for Marshfield.
Pitching, Hoffman threw five strikeouts and gave up six hits, one walk and four runs, two earned.
For Marshfield, Mackenzie Johnson gave up three hits and three runs, striking out 11 Huskies.

In the second game, Tow went 2-3 with two home runs, two RBIs and two runs, but it wasn’t enough to get past Marshfield.
The Huskies lost 5-3.
Marshfield scored a run in the first. Tow hit a home run to tie the game 1-1.
Makenna Melbye singled. Sydney Mauer advanced her to third base on a single and then scored on a throwing error.
Marshfield scored two in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead and again in the third to lead 4-2.
Tow hit another home run in the sixth inning but Marshfield responded with another run in the bottom of the sixth.
Also collecting singles in the game were Waldrop and Kurtz.
Pitching, Hoffman gave up seven hits, two walks and five runs, three earned, and struck out five.
Johnson threw 11 strikeouts for Marshfield, giving up six hits, no walks and three runs, two earned.
