Albert Edgar Cowan, 97, of Sweet Home died June 6, 2018 in his Wiley Creek home.
He was born Sept. 16, 1920 in Birch Tree, Mo. to LeRoy and Anna Mae (Larrew) Cowan. He celebrated his first birthday in a covered wagon on the way to Colorado.
At the age of 19, he moved with his family to Oregon City. He married Beulah King on March 4, 1945 in Hubbard and settled in Sweet Home in 1948.
Mr. Cowan worked at a service station and a dairy before he began a career in logging. He drove for various logging companies, later purchasing his own trucks to be self-employed.
He loved to raise animals, especially cows, to feed his family. He was known as the neighborhood veterinarian. He was also known for his large gardens and plowing up ground for others, so they too could grow vegetables. He loved to work.
Mr. Cowan’s generous heart was known to all by how he helped, served, and was present for others in time of need.
Mr. Cowan is survived by his children, Terry and daughter-in-law Karen Cowan, Cheryl and son-in-law Tony Kowalczik, Keith and daughter-in-law Jeanne Cowan, Alan and daughter-in-law Julie Cowan, and Carlene and son-in-law Dan Dettwyler; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah; his parents; and sisters Ruth Krehbiel and Betty Lehman.
Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, at Gilliland Cemetery, with a memorial service immediately following at 11 a.m. at Sweet Home Mennonite Church.
