Alice Hanscam
Oct. 15, 1931 – July 16, 2025
In loving memory of Alice May (Hyland) Hanscam, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025. She was 93 years old.
Born in White City, Kan., on October 15, 1931 to Myrten and Elsie (Ramsey) Fleming. Alice lived a life filled with love, laughter and purpose. She spent her early years, through high school, in Hoquiam, Washington where she met Robert Hyland. Alice attended St. Peter Nursing School in Olympia, Washington. Rumor has it that she would sneak out at night to see Bob when they were dating. They married in September 1952 in Hoquiam. They lived in Nevada and Portland before settling in Sweet Home in 1962 where Robert opened his dental practice. Robert passed away in 1995.
In 2001, she married Mervin Hanscam. Alice and Merv spent the next eighteen years traveling, golfing and having great adventures together. They spent winters at their home in Desert Hot Springs. Mervin passed away in 2019.
Alice spent most of her life nurturing and caring for others. She was a surgical nurse, ER nurse and the last twenty-five years of her career, she was the Administrator of Twin Oaks Nursing Home. She mentored a number of young men and women throughout her career. Many still talk about her compassion and grace she showed others while caring for them.
She volunteered her time in many local community organizations. Alice was active in Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League Baseball, AAU Swimming and for over ten years, she volunteered countless hours at the local blood mobile.Alice was a long-time member of The United Methodist Church in Sweet Home and was a fifty-nine-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood – (currently Chapter FA). She was awarded “Sweet Home Woman of the Year”, for 1972 because of her community involvement and the impact her work left on the community.
Alice is survived by daughters: Lauri Carlson (Harvey), Diane Hyland-Edwards (Brian); sons: Larry Hyland (Brenda), David Hyland (Lynne), step-daughters: Chris Dahlenburg (Ben), Suzanne Aschinger (Thomas) and step-son: Steve Hanscam (Danielle). Her life was full and complete with 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Dr. Robert Hyland (husband, 1995), Mervin Hanscam (husband, 2019), brothers: Don Fleming (1979), Calvin Fleming (1967), Dale Fleming (1966), Cecil Fleming (2022) and sister: Iona Wallace (2001).
A Celebration of Life will be 11:00 am, Saturday, September 27, 2025 at Sweet Home United Methodist Church.
