Alleged attack on coaches ends in teen’s arrest

Sweet Home police took a 16-year-old Sweet Home boy into custody Monday evening for allegedly attacking Philomath High School coaches following a high school basketball game between Philomath and Sweet Home.

Police charged Ryan Matthew McNabb with second-degree disorderly conduct, third-degree escape and two counts of harassment and minor in possession of alcohol by consumption.

An officer running a routine patrol through the high school parking lot as the game let out observed a disturbance in front of the high school main gym, Sgt. Jeff Lynn said. He found two Philomath coaches holding McNabb down.

When the coaches let McNabb up, he allegedly fled, circling around the gym, Lynn said. Officer Ryan Cummins deployed a TASER device to capture McNabb.

Police investigating the incident learned that McNabb was allegedly in front of the gym cussing and yelling at Philomath players, Lynn said. A Philomath student went inside and told a Philomath coach, who went outside and asked McNabb to leave. When McNabb didn’t leave, the coach sought a Sweet Home administrator but couldn’t find one.

The coach went back outside with another Philomath coach, Lynn said, where McNabb was allegedly cussing and yelling and then spit on one of the coaches.

McNabb attempted to enter the building, but the two coaches blocked him, Lynn said. He allegedly took a few swings at the coaches, and they put him on the ground where the police found them.
