Applicants sought for SHFAD seat

Elmer Riemer has resigned from the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District Board of Directors after 17 years in that position.

Don Hopkins, secretary/treasurer for the five-member board, said Riemer’s resignation was accepted at the board’s monthly meeting on April 18.

Riemer, a native of Dallas, came to Sweet Home in 1963 working for Safeway, with which he had a 39-year career.

He joined the Sweet Home Ambulance District board in 1988, and when SHFAD was formed in 2000, he was elected as a board member.

Hopkins said the board is seeking applicants to fill Riemer’s seat, which runs through June 2019 and will be up for re-election in May of that year.

The position requires attendance at monthly meetings, usually on the third Tuesday of the month, from 7 to 9 p.m. The 971-square-mile ambulance district serves the same area as the Sweet Home School District – from Santiam Junction (Highway 22) on the eastern border to McKercher Park and Santiam Terrace to the west. The 152-square-mile fire district extends to Soda Fork on the east, with the same western border.

Board members approve the department’s annual budget and is in the process of approving the dispersal of the $1.575 million six-year bond approved by voters last year. Purchases and construction projects planned with the bond money include a new ambulance, a new water tender, a new bay for the Foster Substation, new rescue vehicles, and various other equipment replacement.

In addition to Hopkins, other board members are President Dawn Mitchel, Tim Geil and Larry Johnson.

Applications for the position are available and must be turned in at the SHFAD District Office, 1099 Long St. The deadline for submissions is 5 p.m. on May 10. Interviews may be held at the regular board meeting on May 16, when a decision is anticipated.
