Army officer Jerry Farnsworth, SHHS alumnus, to speak at sports banquet

Lt. Col. Jerry L. Farnsworth will be the keynote speaker at the Senior Sports Awards Banquet June 1 at Sweet Home High School.

Tickets to the event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., are $10 per person. The menu will be a Mexican-style taco and fajitas bar.

Farnsworth, a 1987 SHHS graduate, is commander of the 84th Engineer Battalion in New York, where he is an engineer-in-training.

Farnsworth graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1991 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He holds a master of science degree in environmental engineering from Duke University. His military education includes airborne, jumpmaster, engineer officer basic and advanced courses, as well as command and General Staff College.

Farnsworth’s previous assignment was as aide-de-camp and then executive officer to the chief of engineers and commanding general, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Prior to this assignment he was the task force and battalion executive officer for the 864th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) which deployed to Southern Afghanistan in early 2005 for 12 months.

Other assignments have included: executive officer, 3rd Battalion, 364th Regiment (training support); assistant professor of chemistry, United States Military Academy; company commander, Company A, 37th Engineer Battalion (combat/airborne); command engineer officer, United Nations Protection Force, Macedonia; and battalion maintenance officer, executive officer and platoon leader, 94th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy).

Farnsworth’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal (with three Oak Leaf Clusters), Senior Parachutist Badge, British Airborne Badge and the Bronze Order of the De Fleury Medal.

Farnsworth is the son of Jerry and Dora Farnsworth. He is married to the former Kimberly Cokeley and has two sons, Nick and JT.
