Healthy lifestyle class for kids

A program to teach healthy lifestyles to children, Culinary Health Education and Fitness, is being offered at 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m on Thursdays through Dec. 14 for fifth-grade students at the Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Santiam in Lebanon, 525 N. Santiam Hwy, Lebanon.

The CHEF program features free culinary education classes. The program began Nov. 8 but openings are still available.

‘Little Shop’ at SHHS Nov. 16-18

Sweet Home High School students will stage the black horror musical comedy “Little Shop of Horrors” at 7 p.m. on Nov. 16, 17 and 18 in the school auditorium.

Tickets, available at the door, are $4 for adults and $2 for students.

The musical tells the story of an other-worldly plant, Audrey II, which compels Seymour, a hapless florist shop worker, to do more and more to assist it in its growth and further its plans. Audrey II develops a taste for blood, eventually taking over the shop and the lives of its staff.

LBCC to stage ‘The Actor’s Nightmare’

Linn-Benton Community College Performing Arts will perform the play “The Actor’s Nightmare” Nov. 16-18 in the Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Show times are at 7:30 p.m. each evening. This short comic play, by Christopher Durang, follows an accountant who is mistaken for an actor’s understudy, who then finds himself forced to perform in a play even though he doesn’t know any of the lines.

Event to focus on rural health

Meet Rural Oregon, an event designed to showcase and celebrate rural health as well as the quality of life advantages of working in small and rural communities, will take place from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at COMP NW Medical School 200 Mullins Drive.

The event will include a raffle, lectures, food, information booths, and community displays that showcase the health occupations in the Lebanon community. Organizer Oregon Pacific Area Health Education Center, based in Corvallis, seeks to enhance access to healthcare, particularly primary and preventive care, by improving the supply and distribution of healthcare professionals via partnerships with academic programs, communities and professional organizations.

The public is invited to attend and learn more about health care career opportunities in and around Lebanon. Participants are also encouraged to share something you contribute to the local community or that represents what you contribute to community at a showcase table. Donations for a raffle are also welcome.

Turkey Bingo Nov. 18 at SHHS

Sweet Home High School Forestry Club and Sweet Home Volunteer Fire Fighters Association will sponsor a Turkey Bingo from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18 at the SHHS cafeteria.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. This is a family event; all ages welcome. Minors must be accompanied by a parent. There will be concessions, door prizes and raffle drawings.

The cost is .25/card per game or $20 lets you play up to four cards all night.

Free art classes at Albany gallery

Gallery Calapooia will host free art classes led by local artists on Saturdays during the holiday season at 222 First Ave. in Albany.

Classes will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting Saturday, Nov. 18, when printmaker Cheryl French will demonstrate how she designs, carves and prints linoleum print blocks.

The Nov. 25 class will focus on landscape painting; Dec. 2 on gnomes made of felt; Dec. 9 on portraits made of layered sheet vinyl; and Dec. 16 a pottery demonstration.

Free genealogy classes offered

Sweet Home Genealogy Society is offering free classes roughly every other week through mid-February.

The Introduction to Genealogy classes are video-based and are held twice on scheduled Mondays, at noon and at 6 p.m. at the Genealogy Library, 1223 Kalmia St. The instructor on the videos is genealogist Dr. John Philip Colletta.

Topics on Nov. 20 will be “How To Build Historical Context” and “Your Ancestors in the Ship Passenger Lists.”

Health Career Ladder for teens

Interested in a career in science or medicine?

Local teens are invited to participate in the Lebanon Health Career Ladder from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at COMP-NW, 200 Mullins Drive.

The event is one of a series of free Saturday Academies in which COMP-Northwest clinicians, scientists, medical students, and our community partners engage the whole family in science activities to educate and build skills and confidence for students from Lebanon and surrounding communities in grades 6-10. The goal is to provide opportunities for students to create, explore, and develop college and career goals and objectives.

All sessions are held at COMP-Northwest in Lebanon. Lunch is provided for all attending. Adult accompaniment of students is required as participation from parents, guardians or designated adults is a vital part of the experience.

Gingerbread house contest at church

Sweet Home Mennonite Church will host a Gingerbread Competition from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2.

Competitors will make gingerbread houses, which must be submitted in advance, from 3 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The church is at 1266 44th Ave.

Competition age categories are 5-8, 9-12, 13-17 and 18 and over – Adult. Ribbons will be awarded for first through third place in each division and a cash award of $25 will go to the Best in Show winner in each age group.

The houses will also be auctioned off, with proceeds going to contestants.

Entrants are asked to pre-register so organizers know how many houses to expect and can arrange for adequate space.

Judging will take place on Dec. 2, with members of the public invited to stop by and choose their favorite house for a People’s Choice Award.

The entry fee is a canned food item, which will be donated to SHEM.

A gingerbread house will be raffled off, with all attendees receiving a free ticket. Food will be available at a bake sale and a Cookie Corner will provide children with a chance to decorate a cookie and take it home (with parental supervision).

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, Nov. 17, Bavarian beef stew or chicken and penne pasta, Oregon bean medley, spinach Romaine salad, whole wheat roll and chocolate caramel pudding.

The menu on Monday, Nov. 20, is turkey apple meatballs or beef patty with gravy, Colcannon potatoes, cut green beans, oatmeal bread and pineapple.

The menu on Tuesday, Nov. 21, is roast turkey or Salisbury steak, both with gravy, whipped potatoes, mixed vegetables, bread dressing with gravy, cranberry sauce and pumpkin custard with whipped topping.

Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
