Volunteer baristas

needed at hospital

Anyone who loves making coffee drinks is invited to put their skills to use at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

The hospital’s auxiliary is recruiting volunteers to work shifts at the Garden Grounds espresso stand. Volunteers typically work one five-hour shift per week, either 6:30 to 11:30 a.m., or 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

Volunteer baristas will receive all the training they need. The auxiliary uses all proceeds from Garden Grounds, the Caring Corner gift shop and other special sales to purchase hospital equipment and offer student scholarships.

Scholarships for

forestry students

Linn County Small Woodlands Association plans to award four renewable $1,000 Small Woodlands Scholarships to students graduating from Linn County high schools who plan to pursue forestry or forestry-related natural history fields of study.

Application forms, to be returned postmarked or e-mailed by April 30, are available at all of the county’s high schools, at Linn-Benton Community College and from Katie Kohl at [email protected].

Steelheaders to

hear from guide

Long-time professional fishing guide Jack Glass will be the featured speaker for the Mid-Valley Chapter of the NW Steelheaders at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW.

Any angler who pays any attention at all to Oregon fishing and guiding know of Glass, who has been guiding on the Columbia and Sandy rivers full time for over 20 years and is a steward of the waters he fishes.

He started fishing northwest Oregon rivers at age 8, and began professionally guiding in May of 1983 under the name Hook-up Guide Service.

In 2005 Glass teamed up with his son Brandon and renamed his business Team Hook-up Guide Service. He will be talking about catching Columbia and Willamette River spring Chinook.

Landscape design

help via Extension

Oregon State University Extension in Eugene will host a Learning Landscape Open House from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the OSU Extension Office Yard at 996 Jefferson St.

The event is free but donations are welcome.

Volunteers will be available at the raised planter boxes, composting area, adaptable gardening area and elsewhere to provide informal demonstrations and answer questions one hour each month, April through September.

The open house is sponsored by the Lane Country Master Gardener Association in partnership with the OSU Extension Service.

British genealogy

Duane Funk will speak on “Research in Britain” at the Linn Genealogical Society’s monthly meeting at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Albany Public Library, 2450 14th Ave. SE.

The presentation should be of great interest to both travelers and genealogists, especially those who have British family roots. Funk will discuss how to plan and execute a research trip to Britain.

He has made several trips to London and vicinity to conduct genealogical research and find sites connected with his family’s history. A resident of West Linn, Funk is a native Oregonian and a graduate of Portland State University. He retired from the Navy in 1992 and now divides his time between genealogy and travel.

Diabetes support

group meets April 6

People with diabetes or pre-diabetes can learn more about managing their condition at a free monthly support group at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

The hospital’s Diabetes Education team hosts the group on the first Monday of each month, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the hospital. One of the team’s educators will lead a lesson, followed by time for any questions that participants may have.

This month’s topic, on April 6, will be spirituality and advance directive planning, with Chaplain Wes Sedlacek.

Hike up Peterson

Butte on April 11

Build Lebanon Trails will hold its annual Peterson Butte Hike at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11.

The top of the butte provides some of the best views around the valley. Bring cameras and binoculars. Children are welcome.

The hike will take around two hours and cover a distance of 2½ miles with an elevation change of around 1,000 feet. It will involve rocky surfaces and uneven footing.

Participants are asked to wear footwear and clothing appropriate for the conditions. Poison oak may be encountered and, by request of the land-owners, no dogs will be allowed.

Meet on the north side of the butte; just about a mile west of the Lebanon Airport. At the bend on Airport Road and Denny School Road, veer onto Denny School Road towards the butte.

Parking is limited; please carpool if possible. Watch for BLT event signs.

Diabetes Day at

Lebanon hospital

Samaritan Health Services invites the public to learn more about healthy living at Diabetes Day from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Samaritan Center, 605 Mullins Drive in Lebanon.

The Food Network’s celebrity chef Curtis Aiken will lead off the free symposium with a cooking demonstration. Breakout sessions will include information about new diabetes medications, lifestyle changes and preventing complications associated with diabetes.

The Vicki Stevens-Sonny Hess Band, a popular Northwest blues band, will close the symposium with a performance and dancing.

‘Red Chief’ on stage

at Lebanon HS

Lebanon Association for Theatre Arts will stage “Ransom of Red Chief” at 7 p.m. April 16-18 at the Lebanon High School Little Theatre.

Tickets are $5 for seniors and students, $8 for the general public.

LAFTA is holding auditions for its children’s musical theater summer camp later in April, at a date yet to be determined. The camp will be June 15-19 and 22-26.

Auditions for “Mary Poppins” will be held May 11-14. The play will be performed Aug. 1-8.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, April 3, is breaded baked fish with Tartar sauce or baked ham with raisin sauce, Lyonnaise potatoes, zucchini and red peppers, sunflower seed bread and coconut cake.

The menu for Monday, April 6, is beef chili with beans or chicken and penne pasta, whole kernel corn, marinated spring garden salad, seven grain roll and chilled peaches.

The menu for Tuesday, April 7, is chicken pastina or Southwest omelet bake, whole kernel corn, Romaine iceberg salad, multigrain roll and butterscotch bar.
