Learn about wells,

septic systems

Two free classes on wells and septic systems are being offered for Willamette Valley residents this month.

Participants will learn about drinking water well and septic systems, animal health, property investments and the safety of the groundwater resources.

Chrissy Lucas, a program assistant with Oregon State University Extension, will teach the first class from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, at the Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center, room LC-223.

An identical class will also be held in Monroe on April 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Monroe Library.

Participants may have their water screened for nitrates by bringing about half a cup of untreated well water to class in a clean, water-tight container. Nitrate has been associated with a type of blue-baby syndrome, and there are emerging concerns about additional health problems associated with nitrate in drinking water.

The areas at greatest risk for high nitrate in the Southern Willamette Valley are those with well-drained soils on the valley floor. All homes with private wells should be actively monitored for nitrate levels.

The class is free and open to the public. However, pre-registration is appreciated to ensure adequate supplies. To register, call Chrissy at (541) 766-3556 or email [email protected].
