Citizens Academy seeking citizens
Sweet Home Police Department is seeking participants for a one-day Citizen’s Academy.
Once 10 to 12 have signed up, the department will work with the participants to set a date for the six-hour program.
During the Citizen’s Academy, participants will learn about a wide variety of topics related to law enforcement.
They also will have the opportunity to use MILO, a life-size video simulation of law enforcement situations.
Applicants must go through a light background check prior to acceptance into the program.

The Sweet Home Boys & Girls Club invites the community to its 21st Century Night at the Club event from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at 890 18th Ave.

Activists to speak
to local Democrats
Juan Navarro, an immigration rights activist, and Patrick Starnes, a campaign finance reform advocate, will be the guest speakers at the Linn County Democrats’ monthly general meeting Thursday, April 4, at Albany Public Library, 2450 14th Ave. S.E.
A social time with light refreshments begins at 6 p.m. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.
Navarro, a local, statewide, national organizer for immigration rights. is a graduate student in the College Student Services Administration master’s program at Oregon State University.
He is from Guadalajara, Mexico, and grew up in the Salem area. Navarro received a DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) deferment.
Starnes was the Independent Party nominee for governor in 2018. Since the election, he has worked with the governor to have the Legislature refer the issue to voters in 2020.
The April 4 agenda also includes the nomination and election of a Linn County Democratic Central Committee second vice chair and alternates to the Democratic State Central Committee and Congressional District 4 Committee.

Walk a Mile against
child abuse April 6
As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Sweet Home Police Department will host its third annual Walk a Mile for a Child event at 10 a.m. April 6.
The department has made blue mylar pinwheels available, which can be planted in the Police Department’s pinwheel garden or planted at home or a business.
Participants will walk through town and back to the Police Department, 1950 Main St., right after planting pinwheels.
Goodie bags will be given to the first 30 children to register for the walks. Hot dogs and chips will be available immediately following the walk.

Students invited to
compete in spelling
Sweet Home School District’s Spelling Championship will be held Friday, April 10, at the Sweet Home Charter School, 28721 Liberty Road.
Students will compete in three divisions: Elementary (Grades 1-5), Middle School (6-8) and High School (9-12). All students, including home-schoolers, are encouraged to participate.
All the contests are written.
Winners will proceed to the Linn-Benton County/Regional contest, which will be held May 10 at the Oregon Veterans Home in Lebanon. Regional winners will progress to the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship on Aug. 31 at the Oregon State Fair. Winners at the state level will receive cash prizes.

Professor to speak
about Quaker past
Paul Anderson will speak on the “Quaker Family Tree” at the Linn Genealogical Society’s monthly meeting at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Albany Public Library Meeting Room, 2450 14th Ave. SE.
Anderson is a professor of biblical and Quaker studies at George Fox University in Newburg and the author of over 200 published essays and a dozen books. His most recent book, “Following Jesus: The Heart of Faith and Practice,” develops a dynamic perspective on discipleship, influenced by Quaker thought.
In his presentation about the Quaker founders of American ideals and culture, Anderson will trace the influence of William Penn and early Quaker governors of the Colonies upon the ethos of American democracy and society.
He will explore the relevance of the central values of Friends in today’s society, bridging faith and culture in ways that continue to make a difference and may help participants find connections to Quaker ancestors and answer questions.

Forestry lecture
April 6 at OSU
The third of this year’s Starker Lecture Series at Oregon State University will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in the Construction and Engineering Hall at the LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus.
The series is focusing this year on tribal forestry with a film, three lectures and a capstone field trip on May 30.
The final lecture is “Coquille Tribal Forestry: Seeing the Forest through a Cultural Lens,” by Don Ivy, tribal council chief of the Coquille Indian Tribe, and Darin Jarnaghan, the tribe’s natural resources director, on April 10.
Each lecture is followed by a reception, and day tours of Starker Forests will be hosted by Starker staff before the lectures.

Orchestra to play Beethoven, more
Willamette Valley Symphony will perform works by Ravel, Beethoven and Nielsen beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 6, and at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 7, at Ashbrook Independent School, 4045 Research Way, Corvallis.
The performance includes Ravel’s “Valses nobles et sentimentales,” Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 3,” and Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony” No. 8. The symphony will be conducted by guest Mark Stanek, and guest soloist is Sunghee Kim, piano.
Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors 65 and over and students, and free at the door for children 12 and under. Discounts are available for season packages (four concerts).

Adult dodge ball

The Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Santiam will host its inaugural Dodge Ball Tourney from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at 880 18th Ave. in Sweet Home.
The coed tournament is double-elimination, with cash prizes. Cost is $25 per person or $200 per team. Participants must be 18 or over.

If I Were Mayor contest for kids
The City of Sweet Home is inviting local students to participate in the annual If I Were Mayor Contest for a chance to win an iPad Air 2 in a contest sponsored by the Oregon Mayors Association.
Mayor Greg Mahler will select one finalist each in the following categories: elementary Students (grades 4-5) poster contest; middle school students (grades 6-8) essay contest; high school students (grades 9-12) digital media presentation (e.g., video, PowerPoint, Prezi, etc. ).
Entries are due by 5 p.m. Monday, April 15. Posters and essays must be submitted with a completed entry form at City Hall, 1140 12th Ave., or to [email protected].
Sweet Home’s winning students will be recognized during a City Council meeting and have their picture taken in the mayor’s seat.
Winning student entries will also be submitted to the Oregon Mayor’s Association for the statewide contest.
First-place statewide winners in each of three categories will win Apple iPad Air 2 tablets. The winners will receive their prizes at an awards ceremony during the OMA Annual Conference in August in Medford.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, April 5, is chicken pastina or Southwest omelet bake, mixed vegetables, Romaine iceberg salad, multigrain roll and butterscotch bar.
The menu on Monday, April 8, is lemon herb chicken or beef country fried steak with country gravy, whipped potatoes, mixed vegetables, wheat bread and fresh orange.
The menu on Tuesday, April 9, is shaved turkey or meatloaf half sandwich on wheat bread, lettuce and Dijonnaise sauce, six bean soup, broccoli raisin salad and pineapple.
