GOP candidates to speak in Albany

Linn County Republicans plan to host at least two Republican gubernatorial candidates at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at Pop’s Branding Iron, 901 Pacific Blvd SE, Albany.

As of last week, Dr. Bud Pierce and Bruce Cuff were scheduled to appear. They, along with Allen Alley, Bob Forthan and Bob Niemeyer, are facing off in the May 17 primary election.

Each candidate will have the opportunity to speak and answer questions from those who come to the meeting, which is open to the public.

Regular party business will be addressed after the candidates speak. Participants are encouraged to arrive early for socializing or a meal. There is no purchase requirement to attend any portion of the presentations or meeting.

Foster Dam Road

closure Thursday

The road over Foster Dam will be closed from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 7 in order to perform road lighting maintenance.

Pinwheels to raise

abuse awareness

The public is invited to join the Sweet Home Police Department at noon on Friday, April 8, to plant a pinwheel garden in recognition of Child Abuse Awareness month.

Police Chief Jeff Lynn will kick off the ceremony with a short welcome before the planting.

The pinwheels symbolize the innocence and happiness of a healthy, safe childhood.

The garden is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, and a $1 donation will be accepted for each pinwheel planted in the garden or taken to be planted at home or a business. All proceeds from the sale of pinwheels will go to the ABC House in Albany for gas cards to ensure children from Sweet Home can get to the assessment center for appointments.

Children will also be able to make paper pinwheels to plant in the garden or at home.

Blue plastic ribbons donated by Cascade Timber Consulting are available at the Police Department to tie to antennas, and SHPD volunteers will place blue ribbons throughout town as additional awareness about child abuse.

Open mic reading

at SH Library

Sweet Home Public Library will host an open mic reading event from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7.

Sign-ups begin at 6 p.m., with the first to sign up the first to read. Total number of readers will be limited by available time and each reader will be limited to seven minutes. Bring stories and poems and read for applause. All skill levels and genres are welcome, though graphic violence, sex and hate speech are not acceptable.

Hint: Time yourself beforehand, speak loudly and shine.

OSU maker fair

Oregon State University will host a maker fair and symposium April 8 and 9 on the OSU campus in Corvallis.

The event, produced by a campus-community partnership called The Co., has expanded this year into a two-day celebration with a focus on education. It is free and open to the public.

“Maker” culture is a popular movement honoring craftsmanship and technology and the sharing of knowledge, skills and resources. This event offers an opportunity to collaborate, innovate and create, and also provides a forum for teaching the value of hands-on learning in classrooms from kindergarten through college.

The event will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the Learning Innovation Center, Room 100. Additional information about the symposium and a full list of speakers are available on the event website, http://www.corvallismakerfair.org/symposium.

The third annual Corvallis Maker Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in the Memorial Union Ballroom and the Student Experience Center plaza at OSU.

Attendees can speak with experts in the arts, crafts, technology and sciences and join in hands-on learning with exhibitors. Exhibitors include HP Inc .; the OSU Oceanography fab shop; ChickTech; DaVinci Days; students from South Albany High School; the OSU Craft Center; Pi Dads and more.

Michael Town, a physics teacher at Lakeside High School in Seattle, will present an interactive session on skateboard-making. The audience will be involved throughout the process. Space is limited for the session and advance registration is required.

Search and Rescue

seeking volunteers

The Linn County Sheriff Sheriff’s Office is recruiting young men and women, ages 14 to 18, to join the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team.

Those who are interested in becoming an integral part of the Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team, you should have an interest in community service and a desire to be a part of a highly trained and professional lifesaving organization.

Applicants must attend a recruit meeting at the Sheriff’s Office on April 11 or May 9 at 7 p.m. to attend the academy. Successful applicants will be trained in an 11-day program June 17-27.

The application process includes oral interviews, a background check and physical aptitude test.

The 11-day Search and Rescue Training Academy will include classes in wilderness survival, shelter building, search tactics, first aid/CPR, map and compass reading, rappelling, and many more topics.

There will also be a three-day field exercise in the Cascades that include a 20-mile hike.

Republicans plan April 12 forum

Linn County Republicans will host a candidate forum at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at the Linn County Fair and Expo Center.

Dennis Richardson and Sid Lieken, who are running for Secretary of State, will speak and respond to audience questions at 6 p.m.

Candidates for U.S. Senate, Mark Callahan, Sam Carpenter, Dan Laschober and Fay Stewart will speak and answer questions at 7:30 p.m.

Question suggestions are solicited from the audience and the topics of greatest interest to the audience are the issues candidates will need to address.

As of last week, all candidates had confirmed their participation in this event. There is no admission charge and parking is free.

Lebanon women’s dinner Tuesday

Lebanon’s After Five Connection will hold its April dinner event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at King’s Coffee House, 661 S. Main St.

Teri Krebs, who has brought professional-quality musical theater to Lebanon audiences, will discuss what she and her performing troupe have accomplished.

Karon Heineman, a retired funeral director and office coordinator, will speak on “Memories from Grandma’s Attic.”

All women are invited.

Block Party vendor

Downtown Sweet Home businesses will host a Sweet Home Outtasight Block Party on Saturday, May 14, and they are recruiting.

The event will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Organizers aim to bring activity downtown for local businesses and to offer something fun for the entire community.

The event will include the grand opening of one new local business and an anniversary celebration for another.

Activities include vendors selling food and goodies, door prizes, hula hoop and other contests, a photo booth and music from local artists. There will also be a Best Hippie Costume contest, with prizes for adult woman and man and children.

Organizers are Nancy Patton of Trash to Treasure, Amanda Spurlock of Hippie Hollow and Andrea Culy, community volunteer and former chamber director.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try. Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, April 8, is beef patty or Kielbasa with mustard, both on a bun, baked beans, red cabbage and apples, and ice cream cup.

The menu for Monday, April 11, is pasta primavera or beef cabbage bake, country trio vegetables, garden vegetable salad, Caraway rye roll and chocolate chip bar.

The menu for Tuesday, April 12, is hearty chicken stew or lima beans and ham, whole kernel corn, country coleslaw, white dinner roll and vanilla pudding.
