Free sports clinic
offers kids care
Samaritan Sweet Home Physical Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine offers a free sports medicine clinic for student athletes who have recently sustained a sports injury.
Physical therapists at the clinic will assess the student’s injury on a first-come, first-served basis every Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. at the clinic, 646 Holley Road. The assessment does not require a referral from the student’s primary care provider.
This service is available to any student athlete in east Linn County, age 6 to 18. The student’s parent must be at the appointment as well.
A session will consist of:
– A brief screening to assess the injury.
– Education about the injury and how to treat it at home.
– Clinical advice for practice and classroom modification to promote safe return to the classroom and sports activities.
– Clinical advice as to what, if any, further formal treatment is necessary.

Tomato Day at Farmers Market
The Lebanon Downtown Farmers’ Market and the Santiam Food Alliance will host Tomato Day from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the market on the corner of Main and Grant streets.
Lisa Almarode of Fairweather Farm will offer tastings of dozens of unusual and often beautiful tomato varieties from the market farmers and her own garden. An Oregon State University Extension Master Food Preserver will offer information on drying tomatoes and canning them—whole or in pieces, as pizza or spaghetti sauce, as ketchup, as juice, as salsa, and even as marmalade or preserves. A Master Gardener will provide advice on growing tomatoes, and volunteers will offer free samples of tomato-based foods.
Tomatoes will be available for sale from several of the market’s participating farmers.
Public invited to City Hall opening
The City of Sweet Home will hold a Grand Opening for the public at the new City Hall from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at 3225 Main St.
The event will include a performance of the national anthem by Moriah Winn; a greeting from the mayor, a presentation of “My Ore-gon” by Brigett Harrington, who created and performed the poem for the Sweet Home Capitol Christmas Tree celebration last year and in Washington D.C .; a ribbon cutting and tours. Also, a gallery of visual art creations will be on display. Light refreshments will be served.

Baroque trio at Marks Ridge
Marks Ridge Winery’s summer concert series continues on Friday evenings through August at 29255 Berlin Road.
Meadlowlark Trio will play Baroque music at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23.
The all-acoustic trio features a spinet (small harpsichord), cello and oboe, performing Bach, Handel, Telemann and others from the Baroque era.
Bring your own picnic or snacks and enjoy open-air seating at bistro tables or bring a chair or blanket.
Cover is $10 per person. No outside alcohol is allowed.
Hands on History in Brownsville
Downtown Brownsville will host Hands On History day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at the Linn County Historical Museum, 101 Park Ave., and other nearby sites.
Step back in time and try your hand at the crafts and activities practiced by the folks who lived here long ago, listen to the music and stories of the pioneers, black and white, and tales of the native experience.
Library Park offers activities such as wheat grinding, beeswax candle making, crosscut sawing, blacksmithing, quilting, weaving, spinning, bread making, cider pressing and more. Try washing clothes with a washboard and tub, play with pioneer toys, make a pioneer doll. Pan for gold and watch a Kalapuya elder demonstrate flint knapping.
SHUHS Class of 1959 reunion
The Sweet Home Union High School Class of 1959 will celebrate its 60th reunion Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 26-28, at River Bend Park, 45931 Santiam Hwy.
A potluck picnic will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Picnic Shelter No. 1. Class of 1961 members will participate as well.
Some participants will camp in the park.

Red Cross to hold local blood drives
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Sweet Home for a blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church, 1155 22nd Ave.
The Red Cross is reporting an “ongoing emergency blood shortage” this summer.
It has scheduled four more blood drives in Lebanon:
– From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Lebanon Fire District, 1050 W. Oak St.;
– From 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1955 5th St. Lebanon;
– From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Linn-Benton Community College, 44 Industrial Way; and
– From 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the East Linn Masonic Lodge, 725 S. 2nd St.
Dry farming series offered by OSU
Oregon State University Extension Small Farms Program is offering its fifth annual series of Dry Farming Field Days this summer!
More than 30 sites throughout western Oregon are hosting trials this year and four of them, which are engaging in multiple dry farming research projects, will be hosting tours.
The public is invited to learn about dry farming and multiple research projects engaging with the Dry Farming Collaborative, and see crops such as tomatoes, potatoes, squash, melon, dry beans, and corn grown with little or no supplemental irrigation in the field.
Events are:
-Aug. 28, from 4 to 6 p.m., at OSU Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture, 844 SW 35th St., Corvallis;
– Sept. 4, from 4 to 6 p.m. at OSU Vegetable Research Farm, 4306 NE Electric Road, Corvallis;
– Sept. 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Gathering Together Farm, 25159 Grange Hall Road, Philomath; and
– Sept. 11, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Gowen Farm, 9040 Old Fort Road, Independence.
These events are free, but registration is required as parking is limited.

Girod to speak at
Lebanon lunch
State Sen. Fred Girod will be the featured speaker at the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Forum Lunch, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Training Center, 525 N. Santiam Hwy.
Girod will speak on the recent legislative session and other local concerns.
The lunch menu will be BBQ chicken quarters, baked beans, corn, garlic toast, tossed green salad with assorted dressings, and lemon bars.

Basic CPR class at
LBCC health center
A one-day course in American Heart Association Basic Life Support CPR will be offered from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Linn-Benton Community College Health Occupations Center, 300 Mullins Drive.
The course is for those looking to earn a non-credit, non-healthcare track CPR certification. Those who complete it will earn a CPR certification card valid for two years, good for the workplace and beyond.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, Aug. 23, is chicken pomodoro or beef and cabbage bake, Italian blend vegetables, spinach romaine salad, multigrain roll and fresh orange.
The menu on Monday, Aug. 26, is orange glazed chicken or homestyle pork patty with gravy, whipped potatoes, green peas, wheat bread and seasonal fresh fruit.
The menu on Tuesday, Aug. 27, is chicken rice bake or zucchini vegetable lasagna, Brussels sprouts, spinach romaine salad, multigrain roll and cranberry fluff.
