Christmas Tree parade applications

Applications to participate in the Capitol Christmas Tree Parade, a lighted night-time event planned for 6 p.m. on Nov. 9, are being accepted.

The theme will be “Christmas All Year Round.”

Openings are available for equestrian entries, floats, vehicles and marching units. The application deadline is Oct. 22.

Events planned for Nov. 9 include a street fair in front of Sweet Home High School that will include food and merchandise vendors and musical entertainemnt.

Learn about your local chamber

The Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce will hold an after-hours event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at the chamber, 1515 Main St.

The event will include food, fun, and door prizes, as well as opportunities to get to know local business owners and community members.

Board members will share relevant news for existing and potential businesses in Sweet Home.

Movie night at Mennonite church

The Sweet Home Mennonite and River of Life churches are holding Friday movie nights through August at 1266 44th Ave.

There will be free food and drinks each night as well as a free drawing for children 12 and under to receive a Veggie Tales movie.

This week’s movie is “Yours, Mine, & Ours” on Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The movie tells the story of Coast Guard Adm. Frank Beardsley (Dennis Quaid), who decides to move his family of eight children back to his old hometown, he encounters handbag designer Helen North (Rene Russo), an old flame from high school. Immediately, sparks fly between the two, and marriage is proposed. But Frank isn’t the only one with kids to worry about – Helen has a total of 10. Right away, the children have no intention of playing nicely, and together they decide to sabotage their parents’ relationship.

Tomato Day at Farmers Market

The Santiam Food Alliance and Lebanon Downtown Farmers Market will hold Tomato Day from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Farmers Market location at the corner of Main and Grant streets.

The event is free.

Lisa Almarode of Fairweather Farm will give tastings of dozens of unusual and often beautiful tomato varieties from the market farmers and her own garden.

Oregon State University Extension volunteers will offer information on growing and drying tomatoes and canning them – whole or in pieces, as pizza or spaghetti sauce, as ketchup, as juice, as salsa, and even as marmalade or preserves. Volunteers will offer free samples of tomato gazpacho.

Bluegrass Friday at Marks Ridge

Marks Ridge Winery’s summer concert series continues on Friday evenings through August at 29255 Berlin Road.

The Melody Pie Trio will perform a mix of ballads, bluegrass, acoustic swing and lyrical improv Friday, Aug. 24.

Bring your own picinic or snacks and enjoy open-air seating at bistro tables or bring a chair or blanket.

Cover is $10 per person. No outside alcohol is allowed.

Living history at B’ville museum

The Linn County Historical Museum in Brownsville will host a Hands on History living history event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at 101 Park Ave., Brownsville.

Participants will have opportunities to try their hands at various crafts, skills and pastimes that made up the lives of folks who lived in the area long ago, including domestic skills such as carding and spinning wool, weaving, quilting, wash day using wash boards and basins and sourdough bread making. Farmstead skills offered will include blacksmithing, beeswax candle dipping and apple cider pressing.

n Weave a necklace/pouch with Kalapuya tribal member Stephanie Craig, who will also be demonstrating Kalapuya weaving and telling about camas harvest and use.

n For general ambiance, take a ride in a wagon pulled by Tom Marquette’s beautiful Belgian draft mules, much like the breeds of mules that pulled many of the covered wagons on the Oregon Trail.

n Feelin’ like a kid? You can play with pioneer era toys, like the limberjack and the gee haw whimmy diddle.

n Between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., husband and wife duo the Crazed Weasels will perform and teach some dances to music from the 1850s.

n Between 1 and 4 p.m., storyteller Gordon Munro will share amazing true stories of folks’ experiences on the Oregon Trail.

n Pioneer clothing will be available for both young and old to try on and have pictures taken in front of the Drinkard covered wagon that crossed on the Oregon Trail in 1865.

n Gwen Carr will relate the experiences of Oregon’s black pioneers.

All activities are free of charge thanks to a generous donation by Randall Tripp and grants from the Oregon Cultural Trust and the Linn County Cultural Coalition.

Albany paper mill reunion picnic

The Annual Picnic of Past Employees of the Albany Paper mill will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug 25, Millersburg City Park, 3030 Alexander Lane NE.

Theater auditions for ‘Osage County’

Albany Civic Theatre will hold auditions for “August: Osage County” Aug. 27-29 for performances in November at 111 1st Ave. in Albany.

A black comedy written by Tracy Letts, “August: Osage County” won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best New Play.

Albany Carousel story at Forum

The Lebanon Chamber of Commerce’s Forum Lunch will feature a presentation on the Albany Carousel project from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Career Training Center, 525 N. Santiam Hwy.

Wendy Kirby from the Carousel project will tell how an army of volunteers pulled it together. The community and many from the Valley pulled together and created the carousel with hard work and determination, and it has become one of the most popular destinations in Linn County.

Cost is $15 per person and RSVP’s are required. The menu will be barbecued chicken quarters, baked beans, corn and rolls with butter, tossed salad with dressing, and Lemon Berry Jazz Dessert.

Advance directives

class offered Sept. 6

For those needing help filling out an Advance Directive form, there is a new free monthly class available from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital in conference rooms 1 and 2.

The Advance Directive spells out a person’s wishes in case that person can’t communicate for some reason, whether due to an accident or serious illness. These classes help make a confusing document more understandable.

Hospital Chaplain Wes Sedlacek, who leads the classes, will help people to complete their own Advance Directive during each session. He will also discuss the Physician Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) form, which is another document used to specify a person’s wishes for medical treatment, including CPR.

Drop-ins are welcome but registration is requested, either by visiting samhealth.org/SLCHAdvanceDirective or calling Sedlacek at (541) 451-7129.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, Aug. 24, is chicken pomodoro or beef and cabbage bake, green beans, spinach Romaine salad, sunflower seed roll and Rocky Road pudding.

The menu on Monday, Aug. 27, is orange glazed chicken or homestyle pork patty with gravy, whipped potatoes, green peas, wheat bread and seasonal fresh fruit.

The menu on Tuesday, Aug. 28, is chicken rice bake or vegetable lasagna, mixed vegetables, spinach Romaine salad, multigrain bread and orange whip.
