Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels offers take-out lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, Sept. 2, is a chicken noodle bake or cowboy campfire stew, green beans, marinated zucchini salad, white bread and hot cinnamon applesauce.

The community center is closed Monday, Sept. 5, for the Labor Day holiday.

The menu on Tuesday, Sept. 6, is a buffalo chicken sandwich or Polish sausage on a hoagie bun, baked beans, pickled beets, and butterscotch pudding.

Highway 20 closure scheduled

The Oregon Department of Transportation has announced that Hwy. 20 will be completely closed Sept. 9-20 for landslide repair work between Mileposts 55.4 and 56.2, east of House Rock Campground.

Daytime closures will continue through October.

ODOT plans to build a retaining wall and to realign and reconstruct a portion of the road that has been damaged by landslides between Mileposts 56 and 56.2.

It also plans to improve the road surface in portions between Milepost 55.4 and 56.2.

When the road is re-opened, work will require daytime single-lane closures from 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, through October.

Traffic will be controlled by flaggers between Milepost 54 and 57.

Schedules are subject to change, particularly due to wildfires.

Gardening Q&A scheduled Sept. 13

Learn about gardening at a free Second Tuesday Gardening Q&A from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St.

Designer to speak at women’s dinner

After 5 Connection invites local women to a dinner and special program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Ma’s Restaurant, 2416 S. Santiam Hwy., Lebanon.

Maryann Ewing, a local interior decorator who specializes in specially crafted, custom interiors, will present tips and guidelines for creating the perfect ergonomic workspace, whether at home or at your office.

Soloist Madel Jorgensen, of Lebanon, will perform.

Guest speaker Jerri Wickert, of Baker City, will discuss how chocolate draws “a powerful link to life.”

Cost is $15. Credit cards cannot be accepted. Reservations are required.

Take part in Citizens Academy

The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for its upcoming Fall Citizens Academy.

Sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, Sept. 14 through Nov. 30, A Sunday “field trip” will also be planned to a firearms range and Linn County Animal Control; that date has yet to be determined.

Citizens Academy students will be introduced to each of the Sheriff’s Office divisions and specialty teams. Participants receive classroom instruction and hands-on training in areas such as patrol, detectives, corrections, firearms, defensive tactics, traffic enforcement, narcotics investigations, swift-water rescue and dive recovery, prisoner transport and search-and-rescue. Classes are taught by Sheriff’s Office team members.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age; however, applications will be considered for those as young as 16, provided they take part with a parent or guardian.
