Low-cost physicals

for athletes Aug. 8

Low-cost physicals for athletes will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, in the main gym at the Sweet Home High School.

Cost is $30, cash and checks are accepted. OSAA-approved physical forms required will be available at the event.

Eye exams will also be given, so wear glasses or contacts as prescribed.

‘Little Shop’ classic

to screen at mill

Movies at the Mill will present the 1960 sci-fi classic “Little Shop of Horrors” Thursday evening, Aug. 9, at Scroggin’s Mill, 280 W. Sherman St. in Lebanon.

Movies are screened on the side of the mill, so shows begin when it gets dark, generally about 9 p.m. A food vendor will be available.

Admission is free but donations are appreciated. Movies are made possible with a grant from the Linn County Cultural coalition.

Churches hosting Friday night movies

The Sweet Home Mennonite and River of Life churches are holding Friday movie nights at 1266 44th Ave., running through August.

There will free food and drinks each night as well as a free drawing for children 12 and under to receive a Veggie Tales movie.

This week’s movie is “Friendly Persuasion” on Aug. 10 at 8 p.m. The 1956 movie tells the story of a patriarch of a peace-loving Quaker family, Jess Birdwell (Gary Cooper), who begins to question his pacifist values when the Civil War moves toward his close-knit Indiana community.

Meanwhile, Jess’s daughter, Mattie, is in love with a soldier, and her brother, Josh (Anthony Perkins), contemplates picking up arms to defend his home lest he be considered a coward.

As Confederate forces draw nearer, the Birdwells must make some difficult, life-altering decisions.

Jobe Woosley to

perform at winery

Jobe Woosley and his band will perform at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10, as part of Marks Ridge Winery’s summer concert series at 29255 Berlin Road.

Woosley specializes in Folk Americana. Bring your own picnic or snacks and enjoy open air seating at bistro tables or bring a chair or blanket.

The concert is one of weekly Friday night offerings through August at the winery, which will feature a wide range of musical styles.

Cover is $10 per person. No outside alcohol is allowed.

Democrats to hold

potluck, auction

Linn County Democrats will hold their second annual Potluck Picnic and Pie Auction Friday, Aug. 10 in River Park, 1235 E. Grant St., Lebanon.

A social time, including horse shoes and croquet, starts at 4:30 p.m. Dinner, starting at 5:45, will be followed by a 5-minute monthly general meeting and the pie auction.

Local Democratic candidates will give brief campaign updates.

Hamburgers, veggie burgers, condiments, water and lemonade, plates, utensils and cups will be provided.

It’s potluck on everything else, including salads, veggies and fruit. For those who plan to bring perishable items, please have a way to keep them cold.

For the pie auction, people can bake or buy their favorite pie, give it a name it, tell a brief story about it, and auction it off. (Forms will be available for that information). All proceeds will go to the Linn County Democratic Party.

Musical entertainment will be provided by the Crazed Weasels String Band – guitarist Loren Ford and fiddler Judy Arter of Lacomb.

OSU’s ‘Tempest’

continues this week

Oregon State University Theatre’s Bard in the Quad returns this August with the Shakespeare romance, “The Tempest.”

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. nightly Aug. 9-12 in the Memorial Union Quad, 2501 S.W. Jefferson Way, Corvallis.

“The Tempest,” set on a strange and distant island, features Prospero, a sorcerer and rightful Duke of Milan, who conjures a storm to bring his usurping brother and various conspirators to his shores in an attempt to restore his daughter to her rightful place in the royal court. The tale features sprites, monsters, young love and intrigue.

Bard in the Quad performances are held outside and no seating is provided, creating a fun, laid-back atmosphere.

Attendees are encouraged to bring low lawn chairs and/or blankets, warm clothing and food if desired. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m. and no one will be seated prior to that time.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students and seniors, and $5 for OSU students.

Dog walk Saturday

on Lebanon trail

Build Lebanon Trails will hold its annual Paws on the Pavement dog-centered walk from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Marks Slough Trail off of Tennessee Road.

Dogs are welcome at many BLT events, but this is the one to which dogs are specifically invited. Dog costumes are encouraged but not required.

Local businesses that provide services for dogs and other pets will be on site to provide information about their services and products.

Partcipants must keep their dogs on leash and pick up after their dogs.

To get to the Marks Slough parking lot, from the intersection of Main Street and Wheeler Street travel east approximately .8 mile on Wheeler Street.

The trailhead parking area is on the right. Look for the BLT Event signs.

Andy Lynn, Randy

Nicholson at Point

The Point Summer Concert Series presents Andy Lynn and Randy Nicholson on Sunday, Aug. 12 at 6305 Highway 20 in Sweet Home, next to Foster Lake.

Performances start around 6 p.m.

Andy Lynn is a local musician based in Albany, and the Randy Nicholson band has competed in numerous places, one being the Linn County Fair.

‘Hillbilly Mystic’ Paulson to play

Sig Paulson will perform “hippiebilly” music on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Sweet Home Farmer’s Market in the square at 12th and Kalmia in front of City Hall.

Paulson, known as the “Hillbilly Mystic,” performs a blend of folk, country and blues.

The event runs from 2 to 6 p.m. and features local vendors selling all manner of local produce and wares. Musical performers appear each week at the market, which is scheduled to run through the summer.

CCC picnic Aug. 15 at Longbow camp

The Willamette National Forest will host a public potluck in celebration of the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 2907 from 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Longbow Organization Camp.

The potluck style lunch will begin at 12:30 p.m, with foods assigned by last name: A-H brings a hot dish, I-P brings a salad, and Q-Z a dessert. The third annual Sweet Home Community Health Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18.

The fair will take place in the Sweet Home High School activity gym, 1641 Long St.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. The menu on Friday, Aug. 10, is Hawaiian luau special Waikiki chicken breast or sliced ham with orange glaze, diced red potatoes, whole kernel corn, herb roll a9nd coconut cake.

The menu on Monday, Aug. 13, is beef mushroom patty or herbed chicken patty with gravy, Delmonico potatoes, country trio vegetables, multigrain bread and rice pudding.

The menu on Tuesday, Aug. 14, is spaghetti with meat sauce or chicken in peanut sauce with brown rice, mixed vegetables, spinach Romaine salad, herb roll, golden fruit cup and margarine.

Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
