SH library public forums Wednesday
The Sweet Home Public Library is hosting three community forums on Wednesday, Aug. 28, to collect public input for a needs assessment report.

Possible improvements include a dedicated children’s play area, a young adult area, study rooms and remodeling to reflect modern electrical needs and modern energy efficiency, a face lift for the front exterior, removal of the stairs in favor of a ramp and a remodel of the foyer.
The first forum will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Sweet Home Senior Center, 880 18th Ave. Anyone is welcome to attend.
The second is for teens at 3:30 p.m. at the library, 1101 13th Ave.
The third is an open community forum at 6:30 p.m. at the library.
The library also has a poster and sticky notes in its lobby, on which patrons are welcome to write down their thoughts and stick them to the poster.

Local artists’ work displayed at gallery
Melissa Babcock Saylor and Dennis Johanson will be the featured artists at Gallery Calapooia in Albany for the month of September.
Babcock Saylor works in cut paper and collage.
Most of the paper used in her work is hand painted. She also cuts out rubber stamps to print interesting designs on her papers as well as using old postage stamps provided by a gallery member’s spouse.
She enjoys making art with children and animals in them, and continues to work as a children’s book illustrator. Her latest book, “Also an Animal,” is available at the gallery. In addition, she serves as lead painter at the Albany Carousel and is an active member of the City of Albany’s Arts Commission.
Johansen’s pottery career started in 1976, when he learned the basic techniques of throwing on the wheel, trimming, and glazing. After two years he started teaching beginning pottery classes at OSU.
While trying to find out how the clay body reacts to fast and wet throwing, versus throwing slow and dry, he developed a process he calls Porcelain Swirl. By incorporating two colors of porcelain he is able to observe how clay particles move when thrown on the wheel.
Their work is on display through Sept. 22.
A reception for both artists will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Gallery Calapooia. Located at 222 1st Ave. S.W., Albany.
