Hospital collecting

caps for babies

Local knitters and crocheters are invited to create caps for babies during Samaritan Health Services’ seventh annual Click for Babies campaign through the end of January.

The campaign’s goal is to raise awareness and prevent infant abuse during the normal period of infant development when babies cry more than any other time, sometimes inconsolably.

Knitters and crocheters are invited to create any number of purple-colored baby caps and bring them to Sweet Home Family Medicine, 679 Main St., where caps will be distributed to the parents of newborn babies.

The purple caps will serve as a reminder of the Period of PURPLE Crying prevention program, an educational program for parents of newborns at all five Samaritan hospitals. The program provides life-saving information about normal infant crying and the dangers of reacting to that crying in frustration by shaking or abusing an infant. The goal is for the purple caps to help create awareness and reinforce information contained in the PURPLE program to families.

If you are interested in knitting or crocheting caps, contact Joni Scholz, SHS perinatal educator, at (541) 768-6460, or visit clickforbabies.org for more information and a collection of baby cap patterns.

Blood donation

events this week

Blood donors are still needed by the American Red Cross during December, when supplies tend to decline because people are busy.

To encourage donations, all donors through Jan. 8 will receive a long-sleeved Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last.

Donations will be taken in Sweet Home from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 12 at Sweet Home High School. Other area donation dates and locations are:

n 1 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 29 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Brownsville, 1111 N. Main.

n 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 30 at Lebanon Public Library, 55 Academy St.

Donations will also be taken throughout the month of December in Albany.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

To donate, visit http://www.redcross.org/give-blood or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information.

Also needed are volunteer transportation specialists, who deliver blood products to local area hospitals. For more information and to apply for a volunteer transportation specialist position, contact Lynne Calmus at (509) 943-7812.
