Free help for kids with hyper-activity
Samaritan Neuropsychology – Albany is offering free classes for children who have challenges with attention and/or over-activity, and their parents or guardians.
The SM*ART program includes four weekly classes, and is designed to teach skills to help manage symptoms of inattention and over-active behavior for children ages 7 to 11. Classes provide information on behavioral skills then offer the opportunity to engage in an art project with your child that relates to what was taught in the class.
Four-week sessions begin in January, March, May and August. Parents and children are asked to attend each class in a four-week session.

The Sweet Home Chamber will hold the After Hours Event, hosted by The Sweet Home Genealogy Society, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 1223 Kalmia St. The topic is “Know Your Past.”

Statewide Spelling
contestants sought
Oregon students are invited to take part in the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship.
To compete, students compete in a written contest, in their division, first at the classroom/school level. This contest is usually held in March. Winners proceed to district level. District winners compete at the county level. Winners from each county compete at the state contest.

LBCC art gallery
to feature prints
Five Bend artists’ prints will be on display at Linn-Benton Community College through March 17 in an art galley exhibit “Printing the Gamut.”
The artists, from printmaking studio Atelier 6000, will showcase their work in the North Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW Albany.
The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. LBCC art galleries are free and open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Info fair for new parents Feb. 23
New parents in east Linn County are invited to Baby Blast information fair from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 Santiam Hwy SE, conference rooms B-C.
Baby Blast will provide information about services and resources available in their communities for parents and children. Free health checks for babies will be available.

LBCC offers trip to Italy to public
Linn-Benton Community College will offer a tour to Florence, Italy, that is open to students and community members.
The tour will be guided by Dr. Robert Harrison, a social science instructor at LBCC and is offered to LBCC students as a humanities credit class, “The Power of the Past: Florence, Italy.” The tour will run from June 20 to July 5.
Participants will explore the Florence region and culture, including the art and ideas of the Italian Renaissance, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci.
Travelers will stay in the heart of Florence, close to the Duomo Cathedral and train station.
Total estimated cost including round trip airfare, lodging, and meals is $2,600, or $2,900 for three humanities credits.

Pollinators forum March 3 at LBCC
The BEEVENT Pollinator Conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, at the Linn County Fairgrounds, 3700 Knox Butte Rd, Albany.
The conference topic is “The Plight of our Pollinators” and is geared toward the backyard gardener. Snacks and coffee are provided while lunch is not. The cost is $30 per person.
The lecture topics will cover pesticide alternatives, pollinator habitats, and pollinator diversity.

Hospital Auxiliary
offers scholarships
The Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Auxiliary is accepting applications for five $1,000 scholarships granted to students pursuing a health care-related career.
Deadline to apply is Friday, March 10. Those eligible to apply must have a permanent address in east Linn County and be enrolled, and actively attending classes, in a program awarding a degree in a health care-related field.
Applications are available at the Volunteer Services office located at the hospital, 525 N. Santiam Hwy. Along with their application, applicants must also submit: an official transcript that includes Fall Term 2016 grades; a one- to two-page typed statement discussing why the applicant is pursuing a degree in a health field and what his or her goals are; a completed Cost and Resource Estimate Work Sheet; an explanation of any special circumstances, which will help the Scholarship Committee make a fair evaluation (optional); and a letter of recommendation, signed and dated.
Recipients will be notified by Friday, March 31.

Genealogical
workshop in SH
Sweet Home Genealogical Society will hold its annual workshop March 10 and 11 at the Society’s library, 1223 Kalmia St (between 12th and 13th).
The seven topics to be presented are: Using Maps in Family Research; Exploring Seldom Used Features of Familysearch.org; Tips on Finding Unknown Cousins in Germany; Camp Adair; Santiam Wagon Road; Identifying Old Photographs; and DNA Basics.
Speakers will be both local and from out of town.
The workshop is open to the public. Cost is $15 per day with two day tickets available. After March 1, cost is $17.50 per day. Student cost is $5. Society members will receive a discount. A stand-alone DNA workshop is available for $5 from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 11.

SLCH Foundation offers scholarships
Lebanon Community Hospital Foundation is offering a number of scholarships to students pursuing degrees in the medical field.
They are the $1,000 Rachel Easton, RN, Nursing Scholarship for college nursing program students; the Frank Girod, MD, Scholarship for students enrolled in medical school, which can range from $1,500 to $8,000 annually; and the $1,000 John and Carol Dinges Medical Scholarship for east Linn County students enrolled in an entry-level health care program at Linn-Benton Community College.
The deadline to apply for all of the following scholarships is April 30. Winners will be announced by June 1.

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, Feb. 24 is turkey loaf with gravy or BBQ smokehouse chop with garlic mashed potatoes, broccoli cuts, french bread, and frosted orange cake.
The menu on Monday, Feb. 27 is Swedish meatballs or orange glazed chicken with delmonico potatoes, broccoli cuts, bran wheat bread, and cherry whip.
The menu on Tuesday, Feb. 28 is baked ham with orange glaze or southern chicken and rice with blackeyed peas, spinach, cornmeal bread, and peach crisp.
