Head Start taking
local applications
Kidco Head Start Preschool Program is taking applications for children in the Sweet Home area.
Children must be 3 or 4 years old before Sept. 1. Interested families should apply right away.
The free, comprehensive program for low-income and special-needs families includes education, nutrition, medical and dental services, social services, parental education and services for children with disabilities. Emphasis is placed on socialization, thinking skills and hands-on learning. Parents are encouraged to participate.

Free lunch for kids
through Aug. 22
Sweet Home School District offers free lunch to local children ages 18 and younger through Aug. 22.
Lunch is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Sweet Home High School, 1641 Long St., Hawthorne Elementary School, 3205 Long St., and Oak Heights Elementary School, 610 Elm St.
Both breakfast, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and lunch will be served at Little Promises, 28028 Pleasant Valley Road.

Former resident to
speak about book
Former Sweet Home resident Beth Stafford Peterson will speak about her new book, “Life after Lightning: A Journey of Spiritual and Self Discovery,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Sweet Home VFW.
Peterson, an Army veteran, is a two-time survivor of lightning strikes. Her book is “an inspiring detail of powerful ways to live as a strong person in balance with others, your faith, and with yourself.”
Possible freeway
delays near Albany
Oregon Department of Transportation maintenance crews are making nighttime repairs to Interstate 5 south of Albany this week, creating short lane restrictions.
Repairs are being made in both the northbound and southbound lanes between mileposts 228 and 221. Crews are working from 9 p.m. until 5:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday during the week of Aug. 11.
During construction, motorists will have a single lane of travel around the active construction zone. No significant delays are expected.
Paper mill reunion

A 2014 no-host potluck picnic for past employees of the Albany Paper Mill is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at Millersburg City Park.
Each family needs to bring their own service and drinks, as well as a salad and a main dish, or a main dish and a dessert to add to the menu.

Congressman to
appear in Lebanon
Rep. Peter DeFazio will hold a Town Hall from noon to 1 pm. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Lebanon Public Library, 55 Academy St.
This will be one of 20 Town Halls the congressman has scheduled throughout the district to meet with constituents to discuss jobs and transportation legislation, the federal budget, Social Security, Medicare, port dredging and other issues relevant to Oregon’s Fourth Congressional District.
The Town Hall meetings also give constituents an opportunity to share their opinions and have Rep. DeFazio answer their questions about federal issues.
Chamber garage
sale has openings
Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce will hold a community garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 23, at 1575 Main St.
The purpose is to raise funds for an ADA-approved ramp at the chamber and Visitors Center building at that location.
Cost is $10 per table. Hot dogs, chips and soda will be available for $2.

Free astronomy night at B&G Club
Friends of the Sweet Home Public Library will hold a free evening astronomy program from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Sweet Home Boys and Girls Club, 880 18th Ave.
Participants will learn about the size and scale of the universe, the stars and other celestial wonders using hands-on activities and assorted visuals with astronomer Kevin Manning.
Manning is an award-winning astronomer who has worked with NASA, the Chandra X-Ray observatory on the space shuttle, and various other observatories.
Crawfordsville Bridge Day Aug. 24
Crawfordsville will hold its annual Bridge Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24.
The event includes vendors, food and entertainment on the historic bridge at the intersection of Courtney Creek Road and Highway 228, in Crawfordsville.
Tech workshop for
high school girls
ChickTech is hosting a workshop on Aug. 23-24 at Oregon State University to encourage high school girls to enter computing and technical fields.
The event culminates with a show on Sunday, Aug. 24, that’s free and open to the public. It will be from 4:30-5:45 p.m. at the Kelley Engineering Center on the OSU campus, and participants will display the projects they built.
The students may help create a robot, build a video game, or make a smartphone application, and are mentored by industry and academic professionals from high-tech fields.
The event is free for participants, and includes an overnight stay in an OSU residence hall. It’s sponsored or supported by the OSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the Women and Minorities program, the OSU Library, Tektronix, HP, Kattare, and Korvis.
The event is designed as a fun, positive learning experience to build participants’ confidence in their technical abilities, provide positive role models, and create connections with other young women from the area.
ChickTech is a non-profit organization, founded in Portland in 2013 by OSU alumna, Janice Levenhagen-Seeley, who was motivated by her own experiences to foster a more inviting culture for women.

Citizens Academy begins Sept. 9
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office will hold a Citizens Academy on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., starting Sept. 9 and concluding on Nov. 18.
Applications will need to be returned by Friday, Aug. 22. Space is limited.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, Aug. 15, is baked chicken or roast pork with gravy, whipped potatoes with gravy, green peas, herbed bread and chilled peaches.
The menu for Monday, Aug. 18, is beef mushroom patty or chicken patty with gravy, Delmonico potatoes, country trio vegetables, multigrain bread and zucchini brownie.
The menu for Tuesday, Aug. 19, is spaghetti with meat sauce or spinach cheese strata, mixed vegetables, tossed salad, French roll and Mandarin pineapple cup.
