Freeway repairs
to restrict travel
Oregon Department of Transportation maintenance crews are making nighttime concrete repairs to Interstate 5 south of Albany this week, creating short lane restrictions.
Repairs are being made in both the northbound and southbound lanes between mileposts 228 and 221. Crews are working from 9 p.m. until 5:30 a.m., Monday through Thursday during the weeks of Aug. 4 and Aug. 11.
During construction, motorists will have a single lane of travel around the active construction zone. Orange barrels and electronic reader boards will direct motorists to the open lane. No significant delays are expected.
Library to give
away free books
In celebration of National Book Lovers Day, on Saturday, Aug. 9, each adult who checks out a book at Sweet Home Library will get to choose a free book while the supply lasts.
Books available are all new hardback, recent releases by popular authors.

Healing Gardens, Canal Trail Walk
Build Lebanon Trails members will lead a tour of the new, world- class, Samaritan Community Healing Gardens at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9.
Meet at the new Samaritan Conference Center at 605 Mullins Drive, Lebanon.
The walk should take approximately 60 to 90 minutes and will progress through the entrance garden near the COMP Northwest Medical School and continue through the original Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Healing Garden. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the rarely open-to-the-public infusion center.
The walk will extend along the first, soon-to-be-completed, section of the new Canal Trail. No dogs will be allowed on this tour.
New hours for
Farmers Market
Sweet Home Farmers Market, in the Thriftway parking lot, has new hours, now from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
The market offers a wide variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, meat and eggs, locally made bread and other products grown and made by local farmers. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beneficiaries can spend $6 worth of SNAP benefits and get an extra $6 worth of tokens to use at the market.
Harvest Christian to donate backpacks
Harvest Christian Center will hold its annual school backpack giveaway event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at 4231 Long St.
More than 300 backpacks filled with school supplies will be given away and former professional wrestler Ted Debiase is expected to make an appearance. The event will also include a free hot dog lunch and plenty of kids activities.

Albany Paper Mill
reunion picnic
A 2014 no-host potluck picnic for past employees of the Albany Paper Mill is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at Millersburg City Park.
Each family is asked to bring their own service and drinks, as well as a salad and a main dish, or a main dish and a dessert to add to the menu.

Chamber garage sale is Aug. 23
Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce will hold a community garage sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 23, at 1575 Main St.
The purpose is to raise funds for an ADA-approved ramp at the chamber and Visitors Center building at that location. Cost is $10 per table. Hot dogs, chips and soda will be available for $2.

Sheriff’s Citizens
Academy offered
The Linn County Sheriff’s Office will hold a Citizens Academy on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., starting Sept. 9 and concluding on Nov. 18.
The academy will touch on all aspects of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
Students will receive approximately 30 hours of training.
Applications are available at Linnsheriff.org under “volunteer programs.” Applications will need to be returned by Aug. 22.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, June 8, is chicken patty with country gravy or braised beef tips, whipped potatoes, mixed vegetables, rye bread and summer mixed fruit cup.
The menu for Monday, Aug. 11, is baked breaded fish with tartar sauce or baked ham with pineapple sauce, Lyonnaise potatoes, broccoli and carrots, wheat bran bread and cinnamon applesauce.
The menu for Tuesday, Aug. 12, is barbecued smokehouse chop or turkey loaf with gravy, whipped potatoes, cut green beans, multigrain bread and pineapple tidbits.
