Chamber awards deadline extended

The deadline for nomination submissions for the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards banquet, to be held March 8 at the Jim Riggs Community Center, can be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce has been extended.

Deadline for submissions is now 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21.

Awards will be presented in the following categories: Organization of the Year, Business of the Year, Distinguished Service, First Citizen, Junior First Citizen and Patti Woods Woman of the Year.

Table sponsorships are also available, for either a half table of 10 or a full table of 20. Sponsors are asked to decorate their tables in accordance with the banquet theme, “Night at the Oscars.”

Coffee-music night Feb. 22 at Fir Lawn

Sweet Home Song and Grind will hold an evening of music and coffee at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at 109 West Holley Road (Fir Lawn Lutheran Church) in the lower level.

Come enjoy live music by a variety of local musicians in a coffee house atmosphere. The event is free and everyone is welcome. If you are a musician and are interested in participating, call John at (541) 367-5651 or Steve at (541) 818-0630 to get on the schedule for this Saturday.

Can drive for SAFE this Saturday

Class of 2014 SAFE Committee is holding a can/bottle drive Saturday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Students and parents will collect from neighborhoods. Cans and bottles can also be dropped off at the high school, or picked up by special request.

Gospel concert at Nazarene church

Artist Tim Walter will perform a gospel concert at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Sweet Home Church of the Nazarene at 415 Old Holly Road.

Public invited to Trail walk Saturday

The Sweet Home Trails Committee invites local residents to hit the trail on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon for a 2½-mile walk along South Hills Trail.

Participants can join guides at Sankey Park Girl Scout Hut for the out-and-back hike.

Coffee and light refreshments will be served at the end of the hike.

Sweet Home Trails is also hosting a group hike with sister organization Build Lebanon Trails on March 8. Location TBD.

Safe Sitter class at Lebanon hospital

Pre-registration is required by Friday, Feb. 28, for a Safe Sitter babysitting skills class this spring at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

The class will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, March 8. Cost is $50, which includes an instruction manual, a messenger bag and other supplies. Hospital employees Roxie Snyder and Jessica Lybarger, certified program instructors, will lead the classes.

Safe Sitter is a nationally recognized babysitter education program, developed in 1980 by a pediatrician who was recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Upon completion, each student will receive a completion card and will have access to an online newsletter that features a babysitting survey, tips and activities to do when babysitting.

Brownsville antique appraisal event

The Brownsville Women’s Study Club will hold an Antique Appraisal fund-raiser at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at the First Baptist Church of Brownsville on Seven Mile Lane.

Tickets are $25 and available at the Brownsville Community Library or through club members. Light desserts and drinks will be served. The Brownsville Women’s Study Club, organized in 1910, is most commonly known for starting and running the Brownsville Community Library for more than 50 continuous years. Funds raised will go to support club programs.

Guest appraiser Gary Germer is a Portland antique, fine art and personal property appraiser who has been a regular on television and radio antique shows and specializes in work with bank trust offices, non-profit organizations, insurance companies and private individuals in appraising and liquidating antiques, art and personal property appraisal.

Safe Routes to hold SH meeting

Safe Routes to School will hold a meeting, to discuss routes and methods of getting youngsters to school safely in the Sweet Home area, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6, at Sweet Home Junior High, 880 22nd Ave.

Texas Hold ’Em at Lebanon B&G Club

The Boys and Girls Club in Lebanon is hosting a Texan Hold ’Em Poker tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 15.

A $100 buy-in includes pizza, snack and two drink tickets. Re-buy is $50 and the add on fee is $21. This event to benefit the club is for adults 21 and over. Preregister online for extra chips at http://bgcgreatersantiam.org.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Feb. 21, is beef chili with beans or pasta primavera, whole kernel corn, lime perfection salad, cornmeal roll and chocolate frosted white cake.

The menu for Monday, Feb. 24, is smokehouse ribbette or turkey loaf with gravy, creamed potatoes, green peas, French bread and hermit bar.

The menu for Tuesday, Feb. 25, is chicken marsala pasta or beef enchilada bake, Oregon bean medley, creamy coleslaw, cracked wheat roll and spiced applesauce.
