Head Start open

to local children

Kidco Head Start Preschool Program is taking applications for children in the Sweet Home area.

Children must be 3 or 4 years old before Sept. 1. Interested families should apply right away.

The free, comprehensive program for low-income and special-needs families includes education, nutrition, medical and dental services, social services, parental education and services for children with disabilities. Emphasis is placed on socialization, thinking skills and hands-on learning. Parents are encouraged to participate.

Backyard BBQ tickets available

Tickets are available for the Austin Webb Backyard BBQ and Auction planned for noon on Friday, Aug. 1.

Kick off Jamboree weekend with a barbecue lunch and a mini-acoustic set by Jamboree artist Austin Webb. Lunch includes two adult beverages, a commemorative reception poster and reception gifts. There is also a chance to bid on auction items, including a Jamboree VIP package.

All proceeds benefit the Sweet Home Community Foundation.

Church plans can drive for backpacks

Harvest Christian Center youths will be walking the neighborhoods of Sweet Home Saturday, July 19, soliciting empty cans and bottles.

This fund-raiser is for the church’s annual Back to School Bash, in which it plans to give away 500 backpacks full of school supplies to Sweet Home children on Aug. 9. Any donations of cans, bottles and cash is much appreciated. Contact Kristin Adams at (541) 367-6962 if you have a specific pickup request or questions. Donations can also be dropped off between from 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 4231 Long St.

Learn preservation

in Extension classes

The OSU Lane County Extension Master Food Preservers is offering a series of canning classes this summer where participants can learn to preserve alongside the “experts” and take home products to enjoy all year.

All the equipment and produce will be provided unless otherwise noted. The workshops will be hands-on and emphasize safe preservation methods featuring locally produced products. Class size is limited.

Jams and Jellies, Saturday, July 19, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m .: Learn to make jams, jellies and other fruit spreads from both cooked and freezer varieties will be covered as well as low and no-sugar spreads. Participants will go home with at least six half-pint jars of fruit spreads and a container of freezer jam. Cost is $40 plus a $20 lab fee. Location is the Community of Christ Church 1485 Gilham Road, Eugene.

Pickle Passion, Saturday, Aug. 16, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m .: Learn to make pickles – quick dills, bread and butters, dilly beans, beet pickles and sauerkraut. Attendees will take home at least six pints of pickles and a jar of sauerkraut to ferment. Cost is $40, plus $20 lab fee. Location is the Community of Christ Church, 1485 Gilham Road, Eugene.

Tuna Workshop, Saturday, Sept. 6, 10 a.m. until finished (usually about six hours): Learn to use a pressure canner to preserve up to 24 half-pints of the best tuna you’ll ever taste. Students provide their own jars and lids. Cost is $60, plus the cost of tuna (to be determined by the market price at the time of the workshop). Location is FOOD For Lane County, 770 Bailey Hill Road, Eugene.

B&G Club sports

Deadlines for registering for Boys and Girls Club fall sports are July 23 for volleyball and football and Aug. 6 for fall baseball.

Volleyball is for grades three through six. Flag football is for second- through fourth-graders and tackle football is for fifth- and sixth-graders.

Fall baseball will be for grades two through six.

Registration must be completed by 5:30 p.m. on the day of the deadline to be placed on a team. Any late registrations will be put on a waiting list and added to teams if room allows. Late registrants will also be charged a $10 late fee.

The Boys and Girls Club is always on the lookout for quality coaches. Those interested in coaching should fill out a coaches application and background check at the club. Team sponsors are also needed. For more information, contact the club at (541) 367-6421.

development series

The professional development series “Developing World Class Employees” will be offered by Linn-Benton Community College Business and Employer Services throughout 2014-15.

Summer and fall workshops include: July 29, Creativity, Risk Taking and Innovation; Aug. 19, Think Strategically, Act Operationally; Sept. 23, The Good, The Bad and The Difficult: Personality Styles at Work; Oct. 21, Dealing Effectively with the Angry Customer; Oct. 28, Training and Coaching for Performance Improvement.

All workshops will meet 8 a.m. to noon at LBCC’s Fireside Room, room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. Cost for each workshop is $79 per person, or $69 each for three or more from one company.

Seven Brides plays in Lebanon in Aug.

Lebanon Association for Theatre Arts will stage “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” at 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, Aug. 5 through 9, and a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Lebanon High School Auditorium.

Summer volleyball

camp at LBCC

A Summer Volleyball Clinic will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Aug. 4-6 for students entering grades seven through nine, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the LBCC Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

The clinic provides three days of three-hour sessions with instruction on all aspects of the game including serving, passing, hitting, setting, blocking and defense.

Cost is $60 per player if registered before July 15, and $75 after. Preregistration is preferred.

Albany mill staff

reunion Aug. 16

A 2014 no-host potluck picnic for past employees of the Albany Paper Mill is planned for 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at Millersburg City Park.

Each family needs to bring their own service and drinks, as well as a salad and a main dish, or a main dish and a dessert to add to the menu.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, July 18, is chicken pasta or potato and ham salad on spinach Romaine, minestrone soup, wheat roll and chilled peaches.

The menu for Monday, July 21, is roast pork with orange glaze or country steak with gravy, Colcannon potatoes, lima beans, cracked wheat bread and hermit bar.

The menu for Tuesday, July 22, is meatloaf or shaved turkey sandwich half on wheat bread, vegetarian vegetable soup, Asian slaw and applesauce.
