Free diabetes class
begins Wednesday
East Linn County residents diagnosed with pre-diabetes or similar conditions can benefit from a free eight-week class at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital (SLCH).
The SLCH Diabetes Education team will begin its next Diabetes Prevention class on Wednesday, June 11, from 1 to 2 p.m. The free weekly class will run for eight Wednesdays, concluding on July 30. Topics include weight loss, healthy eating, exercise and other lifestyle changes that will help people avoid a diagnosis of diabetes.
In addition, the hospital’s diabetes team facilitates a monthly support group for anyone diagnosed with diabetes, pre-diabetes or similar conditions. The group meets the first Monday of every month – unless the first Monday is a holiday.
The next group meeting will be Monday, June 2, from 11 a.m. to noon at the hospital. Tiffany Wadlow, RN, will lead a discussion about stress management at this meeting.
Pre-registration is required for the Diabetes Prevention class and the support group. Participants are encouraged to complete the Diabetes Prevention class before joining the support group, but it’s not required.

Hope Center plans
3-day benefit sale
The Hope Center will hold a benefit sale Wednesday through Friday, June 11-13 at the corner of 12th Avenue and Kalmia Street.
Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 Wednesday and Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday. The sale will include formal dresses, furniture, figurines, men’s and summer items.
Friday deadline for
karaoke contest
Friday, June 13, is the deadline to sign up to compete in the Sweet Home Veterans Club and Double “D” Karaoke’s eighth annual Karaoke Contest at the Veterans Club.
Entry fee is $8 to win cash, prizes and more. Preliminaries start Saturday, June 14, followed by semifinals on June 21 and Finals on June 28. All competitions start at 7 p.m. sharp. Only karaoke CD’s are allowed.

Linn-Benton Community College is offering free Summer Career Academies for high school students.
Students age 15 and up get hands-on experience in careers including drafting and engineering 3D modeling, machine tool computer numerical control and design, mechatronics robotics and microcontrollers, welding, or farm-to-table agriculture food growing and marketing.
Sessions start June 23 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW.

Sci-fi author to visit Brownsville
Science fiction writer S.M. Stirling will speak at the Brownsville Community Library at 7 p.m. Friday, June 13.
Stirling is best known for his Draka series of alternate history novels and the more recent time travel/alternate history Nantucket series and Emberverse series, the latter set in the Willamette Valley.
His talk will be held in the Kirk Room at the library, 146 Spaulding Ave.

Free Safety Fair
Saturday at SHPD
Sweet Home will hold its annual Jim Bean Memorial Community Safety Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 14, at the Police Services building, 1950 Main St.
The free event includes document shredding, child IDs, kids, bike inspections and helmets, appearances by local police and fire department representatives, hot dogs and drinks and much more – all free.

Squarenaders plan Flag Day dance
Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold a Red, White and Blue Square Dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14 – Flag Day, at Oak Heights School Gym, 6th and Elm.
Plus begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by the main square dance form 8 to 10:30 p.m.
Square dance caller will be Leonard Snodgrass, with round dances cued by Jackie Gale.
A pot luck will be held at the break. Suggested donation for the dance is $5.

Elks, VFW to hold
flag history event
The Sweet Home Elks Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Vets Club organizations will commemorate Flag Day and the birth of the American flag at noon on Sunday, June 15 at the lodge, 440 Osage.
The public is invited to attend the presentation.
“We present nine different flags that have been used by the United States,” said Dennis Bechtel, past exalted ruler.
In 1775, the Pine Tree flag was adopted by the colonial governments.
The 45-minute presentation will cover the history of U.S. Flags.
An honor guard will carry each of the flags into the presentation.

Free voice care
class June 17
Speech pathologist John Tracy will conduct a free seminar from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital for a free seminar to learn more about what affects your voice, and how to take care of your vocal cords.
Your voice is an important part of who you are, but several outside forces can affect it, from seasonal allergies to underlying health conditions. Left unaddressed, this can cause problems as you communicate with friends and family, and you risk damage to your voice.
Tracy will discuss common voice problems, as well as breathing and speaking techniques to keep your voice strong.
This seminar will be in conference rooms B and C at the hospital. Healthy snacks and beverages will be provided.

LBCC offers art, exercise classes
A variety of art and exercise classes will be offered this summer through Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon and Sweet Home centers.
In Sweet Home, “Corks and Canvas” watercolor class offers a unique way to explore your artistic talent while enjoying the atmosphere of a local winery. No experience necessary. Class will meet Monday, June 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Marks Ridge Winery in Sweet Home. Cost is $39.
“Calligraphy II” class is a continuation of Calligraphy I, exploring more formal and cursive lettering system. This six-week class meets Tuesdays starting June 24 from 1 to 3:20 p.m. at the LBCC Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St. Cost is $44.
For exercise, choose from Aquatic Fitness, Aqua Zumba, Better Bones and Balance, Body Toning and Aerobics, Cardio Strength and Balance, Easy Cardio Fitness, Easy Does it Exercise, Yoga, Zumba, or a Triathlon Training Clinic.
Classes start the week of June 23.

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. The lunch menu on Friday, June 13, is chicken patty parmesan or BBQ smokehouse chop, Colcannon potatoes, succotash, squash bread and orange frosted orange cake.
The menu for Monday, June 16, is Waikiki chicken or Swedish meatballs, creamed potatoes, Scandinavian blend veggies, wheat bran bread and fresh orange.
The menu for Tuesday, June 17, is shaved turkey or ham sandwich half on wheat bread, Navy bean soup, carrot slaw and chocolate zucchini brownie.
