Hwy. 228 ramp

closure June 4

A pavement repair project will result in a single nighttime closure of the Exit 216 off-ramp from southbound Interstate 5, at the junction with Highway 228 near Brownsville, Wednesday, June 4.

Beginning at 9 p.m. Wednesday, and continuing until 6 a.m. Thursday, June 5, the ramp will be closed. Only the southbound ramp will be affected.

During the closure, motorists wishing to access Highway 228 from southbound I-5 will be directed to take Exit 228 at the Highway 34 junction.

Kidco preschool

taking applicants

Kidco Head Start Preschool Program is taking applications for children in the Sweet Home area.

Children must be 3 or 4 years old before Sept. 1. Interested families should apply right away.

The free, comprehensive program for low-income and special-needs families includes education, nutrition, medical and dental services, social services, parental education and services for children with disabilities. Emphasis is placed on socialization, thinking skills and hands-on learning. Parents are encouraged to participate.

Resident to talk about Africa trip

Local resident Beth Suhr will share her travel photos from a recent trip to Tanzania and her ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Sweet Home Library.

LBCC choirs to

perform Thursday

The Linn-Benton Community College award-winning choirs will perform their spring concert “Journey in Song!” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 5, in the LBCC Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Conducted by LBCC director of choral activities, Dr. James Reddan, the performance includes the Concert Choir, Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir, the Musical Theater/Opera Workshop, and the a cappella groups Blue Light Special and The Sirens. LBCC choirs include a number of Sweet Home residents.

The concert will feature an eclectic array of works spanning the choral repertoire including “Johnny’s Gone for a Soldier” (Boudreaux), “How Can I Keep from Singing” (Gilpin), “Daemon irrepit callidus” (Orban), “The Coolin’ “(Barber), “Twa Tanbou” (Guillaume), and much more.

LBCC vocal a cappella ensembles will present a wide variety of popular favorites including “I See Fire,” “Happy,” “Say Something,” “Day Dreaming” and “Little Wonders”.

LBCC Musical Theater/Opera Workshop, directed by James Reddan and Dan Stone, will present short pieces from the Broadway hit “Sweeny Todd.”

During the concert, the second annual Lee M. Westford Scholarship in Music will be presented. Tickets are $10 general admission, $7 for students, seniors, and veterans, and $5 for under 18. Dinner, program for women June 10

After Five Connection will host a dinner and program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10 at King’s Coffee House, 651 Main St., Lebanon.

Cost is $7 for dinner and the program. Credit cards are not accepted.

The program will include a comedy skit by Loris Ketter, “How Many Hats Do You Need?” and guest speaker Darien Parson of Yelm, Wash., a teacher’s assistant in special education and farmer’s wife, who will tell how she overcame life’s problems by learning to “light her candle.”

Women of all ages and walks of life are invited.

City to hold Safety

Festival June 14

Sweet Home will hold its annual Jim Bean Memorial Community Safety Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 14, at the Police Services building, 1950 Main St.

The free event includes document shredding, child ID kids, bike inspections and helmets, appearances by local police and fire department representatives, hot dogs and drinks and much more – all free.

Squarenaders plan

Flag Day dance

Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold a Red, White and Blue Square Dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 14 – Flag Day, at Oak Height School Gym, 6th and Elm.

Plus begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by the main square dance form 8 to 10:30 p.m.

Square dance caller will be Leonard Snodgrass, with round dances cued by Jackie Gale.

A pot luck will be held at the break. Suggested donation for the dance is $5.

Photo contest in

Brownsville

The Brownsville Chamber of Commerce is conducting a photo contest focusing on “in-action” shots of people having fun at events and around town along with great still shots of iconic locations.

The Brownsville Art Association will conduct the contest. Prizes will be $100 for first place, $75 for second and $50 for third place.

Contest deadline is 4:30 p.m. on June 27.

Contestants may submit their photos via e-mail, USB drive, CD, or DVD. A $1 entry fee will be charged for every five photos submitted. Robbie Melcher golf tourney

The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam will hold its fifth annual Robbie Melcher Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, June 27, at Mallard Creek Golf Course, 31958 Bellinger Scale Road, Lebanon.

The event, sponsored by Linn-Co Federal Credit Union, is a fund-raiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam. Check in and continental breakfast start at 7:30 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., and a barbecue lunch and awards on the patio after the tournament.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, June 6, is turkey loaf or country fried steak with cream sauce, whipped potatoes, glazed carrots, white bread and apple streusel cake.

The menu for Monday, June 9, is Oriental rice with pork or chicken pomodoro, peas and carrots, spinach Romaine salad, caraway rye roll and peanut butter bar.

The menu for Tuesday, June 10, is homestyle turkey patty with gravy or beef Swiss-style patty, creamed potatoes, broccoli cuts, onion bread and banana pudding.
