Hospital offers

HAM radio class

Anyone interested in learning more about HAM amateur radio, or learning to become a HAM radio operator, is invited to a free upcoming training series at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

The hospital and Linn County Amateur Radio Emergency Services are partnering on the training sessions. HAM radio has been recognized as the most reliable form of communication during emergencies and disasters.

The trainings will take place over four Wednesdays, May 14 through June 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. in conference room 3 at the hospital. While the training sessions are free to attend, participants will need to purchase an ARRL HAM Radio License Manual, which is available through Amazon.com. Anyone wanting to take the operator test afterward will need to pay a $15 registration fee for the test.

Registration is required as space is limited. For more information, please email Roger Emery at [email protected].

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event includes a baked potato bar. The meal is free, but there will be a donation bucket to help pay for the food.

Two years ago, Fir Lawn sent 12 children to camp. Last year, it sent 24. This year, organizers hope to send 25.

The camp is an opportunity for local children who may not ever have the chance to go to camp. The goal is not proselytizing. It’s “no strings attached.”

A free seminar on stroke prevention will be held Tuesday, May 20, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, in conference rooms B and C.

The seminar will be led by medical director for Samaritan Stroke Services, Richard Lafrance, MD, and AmieJoe Roper, RN, Samaritan Stroke Services program coordinator, who will share helpful information about how to prevent a stroke, recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke and what to do if a stroke is suspected.

“A quick and coordinated response is key when it comes to stroke,” said Roper. “Time lost is brain lost, and patients, their family members, emergency responders and health care providers are all partners in responding to stroke. Learning to recognize the signs and signals and knowing what to do can make a huge difference. If you have concerns or a history of stroke in your family, do not miss this educational opportunity.”

Registration is encouraged as space is limited. Heart healthy refreshments will be provided.
