Bible club offered Tuesday afternoons
A weekly after-school Good News Club is being held Tuesdays, from 2:50 to 3:50 p.m., at Hawthorne School.
The free interdenominational Bible club, sponsored by Child Evangelism Fellowship, will include missionary stories, games and more. Children must have permission from a parent or guardian before attending. Permission forms are available outside the school office. Children grades kindergarten through 6 are welcome.

Veterans Parade deadline Oct. 31
Entries are being accepted for the 63rd annual Albany Veterans Day Parade.
Applications are available by visiting http://www.albanyveteransdayparade.org. Parade categories include bands, floats, marching units, private vehicles, equestrians, walking units, bands and color/honor guards. The parade is the largest west of the Mississippi River.
Deadline for applications is Friday, Oct. 31.

Steelheaders to hear from guide
The Mid-Valley Chapter of the NW Steelheaders will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Ave. NW.
This month’s program will be presentations from fishing guide Matt Halseth, along with Sam Wurdinger of Dingers Jigs.
Halseth is a native Oregonian who grew up in Lyons and has fished the North Santiam and Little North fork since he was able to hold a pole. He has been guiding since 2012 and has nearly 20 years of steelhead and salmon fishing expertise under his belt. He spends his summers at Jake’s Nushagak Salmon Camp in Alaska, enjoying the beautiful scenery and wildlife and slaying the king salmon.

Dog obedience class starts Oct. 1
The class “Dog Obedience” will be held through Linn-Benton Community College at the Lebanon Senior Center Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. starting Oct. 1.
The 10-week class will cover basic commands, proper equipment, socialization, rewarding good and breaking bad behavior, games and tricks, and responsible pet ownership. Veterinary shot record and history form required. Dogs do not attend the first day of class. Cost is $49.

Ladies Night Off! event at B&G Club
The Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Santiam will hold “Ladies Night Off! A Night in Paris” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 305 S. 5th St. in Lebanon.
Enjoy shopping in the Streets of Paris Boutique, plenty of food and beverages, the greatly anticipated purse auction, pampering stations, live entertainment, and more. New this year is the “embellished stilletto,” so participants are encouraged to get their design on and create or find an amazing pair of heels.

Geneologists to talk Irish Saturday
Linn Genealogical Society will host Carol Surrency, who will speak on Scotch-Irish immigration to America at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Albany Public Library, 2450 14th Ave. SE.
Surrency, a Hillsboro resident, is a former high school English teacher and social service worker. She has been researching her family history for more than 30 years. She was president of the Oregon Historic Cemeteries Association for 10 years and has been active in the Washington County Genealogical Society. For the past five years, she has been an editor for the Genealogical Forum of Oregon’s quarterly magazine and is currently a leader of the Virginia Interest Group at the Forum.

Rock Hill School open house Sunday
The Rock Hill School Foundation will hold a free open house from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5, at the historic one-room school located at 36145 Rock Hill Drive, between Lebanon and Brownsville.
Built in 1912, it served rural children until 1935, then was used for hay storage.
Restoration began in 1990 with the establishment of the RHSF.
Beverages and chili dogs will be available for sale. All are welcome.

Diabetes classes offered at SLCH
People with diabetes or pre-diabetes can learn more about managing their condition at a free support group that meets from 11 a.m. to noon on the first Monday of each month at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.
The hospital’s Diabetes Education team will host the group. One of the team’s educators will lead a lesson, followed by time for any questions that participants may have.

B&G Club hoops deadlines nearing
Basketball sign-up deadlines for Sweet Home Boys and Girls Club winter basketball are approaching.
Wednesday Oct. 8, is the deadline for first- through fourth-grade basketball. First and second grade will be coed and teams will be separate at the third- and fourth-grade levels for boys and girls. All first- and second-grade games will be played at the Sweet Home Club. Depending on the number of teams, third- and fourth-graders may have to travel to Lebanon and Scio. Practices for early winter basketball will begin the week of Nov. 3.
The deadline for fifth- and sixth-grade basketball is Wednesday, Nov. 1. Player evaluations will be held for boys at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, and at 11 a.m. that day for girls. All players are expected to participate in evaluations. The club will have two levels of play for the boys and girls teams. Every child who registers will be placed on a team.
Any child who does not register on time will be placed on a waiting list and then added to teams if they are not full. A $10 late fee will also be charged.

Annual farmers breakfast Oct. 14
Oregon State University Extension’s annual Rusty Skillet Breakfast will be held at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Oregon Firearms Academy on Ranch Road in Brownsville.
The event starts with coffee around an open campfire for early arrivals, followed by breakfast at the scheduled time and the educational program: “High moisture balage – making it and using it.” There will also be a cattle and sheep market report and a buyer’s panel is being organized.

Half-marathon nears in Lebanon
The Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon, a fund-raiser for ABC House, will be held Oct. 18 at Cheadle Lake Park in Lebanon.
ABC House is a nonprofit child abuse intervention center that has served Linn and Benton counties since 1997.
The 13.1-mile run starts at the park, winds through Lebanon, across the Grant Street bridge, along Berlin Road and Plagman Drive to Waterloo, then back to the park via River and Weirich drives. Awards will be offered for the top three finishers in age groups from 14 and under to 75-plus.

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, Oct. 3, is turkey salad or egg salad sandwich half on wheat bread, vegetarian vegetable soup, creamy coleslaw and pineapple.
The menu for Monday, Oct. 6, is chicken patty or baked ham with country gravy, Delmonico potatoes, steamed carrots, herb bread and fresh orange.
The menu for Tuesday, Oct. 7, is homestyle turkey patty or beef Swiss-style patty, whipped potatoes, country trio vegetables, sunflower seed bread and peaches.
