Kids invited to
stargazing event
Linn-Co Federal Credit Union will host its 14th Annual Star Gazing Extravaganza for kids of all ages at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Mallard Creek Golf Course in Lebanon.
The fun begins with frosted star cookies and milk, followed by a speaker from the Heart of the Valley Astronomy Club, then a drawing for a cool new Orion Telescope (must be a Star Saver member for the drawing. Bring your postcard). Linn-Co’s Star Saver mascot, Orion, will be there too.
The final event of the evening will be relaxing and gazing at the sky with cool telescopes provided by Heart of the Valley Astronomy Club volunteers.
Participants are welcome to bring their own telescope or gaze through one provided.
Don’t forget a blanket for you and maybe a chair for the older “kids.”
Hoops deadlines start Wednesday
Basketball sign-up deadlines for Sweet Home Boys and Girls Club winter basketball are approaching.
Wednesday Oct. 8, is the deadline for first- through fourth-grade basketball. First and second grade will be coed and teams will be separate at the third- and fourth-grade levels for boys and girls. All first- and second-grade games will be played at the Sweet Home Club. Depending on the number of teams, third- and fourth-graders may have to travel to Lebanon and Scio. Practices for early winter basketball will begin the week of Nov. 3.
The deadline for fifth- and sixth-grade basketball is Wednesday, Nov. 1. Player evaluations will be held for boys at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, and at 11 a.m. that day for girls. All players are expected to participate in evaluations. The club will have two levels of play for the boys and girls teams. Every child who registers will be placed on a team.
Any child who does not register on time will be placed on a waiting list and then added to teams if they are not full. A $10 late fee will also be charged.

Squarenaders plan
‘Hobo’ dance
Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold a “Hobo Square Dance” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Oak Heights school gym, 6th Avenue and Elm Street.
The Plus begins at 7:30 p.m., with the main square dance from 8 to 10:30 p.m.
Square Dance Caller will be Jim Voll, while round dances will be cued by Jackie Gale.
Hobo Stew will be served at 6:45 p.m., before the dance.
Suggested donation for the dance is $5 for adults, $4 for youths.

Farmers breakfast
Tuesday morning
Oregon State University Extension’s annual Rusty Skillet Breakfast will be held at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Oregon Firearms Academy on Ranch Road in Brownsville.
The event starts with coffee around an open campfire for early arrivals, followed by breakfast at the scheduled time and the educational program: “High moisture balage – making it and using it.” There will also be a cattle and sheep market report and a buyer’s panel is being organized.

Women’s dinner
Tuesday evening
After Five Connection will hold a dinner for women from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Kings Coffee House, 651 Main St. in Lebanon.
Jeanie Prentice, a business owner from Bend, will talk about how she discovered the true meaning of “belonging,” which changed her life for the better.
Also, participants will learn some creative ways to carve pumpkins into beautiful, funny or very scary faces.
Dinner is included. Cost is $7 per person. Credit cards cannot be accepted.

Free workshop on growing forest
Linn County Small Woodlands Association will hold a workshop on “What to Know When Planting a Forest” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Linn-Benton Community college’s Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way.
Topics to be discussed include site preparation, tree seeding selection, planting, weed control and animal damage control.
Pre-registration is not necessary. Refreshments will be provided.
Runaway Pumpkin
race Oct. 18
The Runaway Pumpkin Half Marathon, a fund-raiser for ABC House, will be held Oct. 18 at Cheadle Lake Park in Lebanon.
ABC House is a nonprofit child abuse intervention center that has served Linn and Benton counties since 1997.
The 13.1-mile run starts at the park, winds through Lebanon, across the Grant Street bridge, along Berlin Road and Plagman Drive to Waterloo, then back to the park via River and Weirich drives. Awards will be offered for the top three finishers in age groups from 14 and under to 75-plus.

Theater to stage ‘Frankenstein’
Mel Brooks’ musical “Young Frankenstein” will be performed Oct. 24-Nov. 15 by the Albany Civic Theater.
The musical tells the story of Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”), grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, who inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igot (Eye-gore), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. He brings to life a monster to rival his grandfather’s, which eventually escapes, and hilarity follows.

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, Oct. 10, is breaded baked fish with Tartar sauce or meatloaf with gravy, Colcannon potatoes, green peas, garlic bread and applesauce.
The menu for Monday, Oct. 13, is ground beef and noodles or sweet and sour chicken with rice, whole kernel corn, marinated spring garden salad, multigrain roll and spiced pears.
The menu for Tuesday, Oct. 14, is BBQ smokehouse chop or rotisserie-style chicken, Lyonnaise potatoes, broccoli cuts, bran wheat bread and peanut butter bar.
