Linn County Republicans have opened their 2014 Campaign Office at 33935 Hwy 99E in Tangent.
The office is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with additional evening hours scheduled for specific activities. Candidate literature and signs are available on site. There are opportunities for volunteers to make phone calls on behalf of candidates or walk door to door handing out literature.
The Linn County Republicans encourage voters to become active in getting to know the qualifications and capabilities of every candidate seeking elected office.

Dog owners warned about dead salmon
The Oregon Dept of Fish & Wildlife will be distributing salmon carcasses to the South Santiam River and its tributaries (Canyon, Moose, Soda Fork, Crabtree, Thomas Creeks) and the Calapooia River on Sept. 10, 17 and 24.
The salmon carcasses will remain in the rivers for several weeks after they are distributed. Dog owners should be extra vigilant and keep their dogs away from the salmon. Salmon may harbor an organism, nanophyetus salmincola, which can be deadly to dogs that eat the fish.
Symptoms of the disease include vomiting and diarrhea, and the dog will need veterinary care to survive.
VFW beard contest set for Sept. 20
Double D Karaoke will host a beard, moustache and goatee contest at 6 p.m. on Sept. 20 at the Sweet Home Veterans Club, 580 Main St.
The entry fee is $4. Money is split among the winners from each category.
Cowboy Cadillac will perform that night.

American Legion
revitalizing in SH
The American Legoin will host a “Welcome Home” ceremony for all veterans at the American Legion Post, 1127 Long St., from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 2.
Membership and veterans information staff will be available.
The American Legion is planning to expand its existing outlet here in Sweet Home to interface with and serve the community.
It is inviting all wartime veterans to join in revitalizing the Sweet Home American Legion, Timber City Post 133.
In keeping with the tradition of the American Legion, the newly reformed American Legion post will foucs on community service and assistance to veterans. The scope and nature of the post’s community service will be determined by its members and inputs from local civic and community officials.
SInce its inception in 1919, the American Legion has been a key advocate for veterans benefits, children, patriotic American values, a strong national defense and quality-of-life issues for those serving in today’s armed forces.
The organization, which spearheaded the original GI Bill, has been advocating reform of the veterans healthcare system under its GI Bill of Health. The organization is partly responsible for creating the forerunner of the Department of Veterans Affairs and the agency’s ascent to cabinet-level status, and it also was instrumental in establishing the Veterans Home Loans program.
Extension offers cheesemaking class
If you’ve ever wanted to learn to make your own soft cheese using goat and cow’s milk, here is your chance.
The OSU Extension Master Food Preservers are offering a hands-on cheese making workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Community of Christ Church, 1485 Gilham Road, Eugene. Cost is $60, which includes a lunch featuring the cheeses made in class.
Instructor will be local cheese maker Susan Jackson, who has experience making a variety of soft cheese and can answer your cheese making questions. Students will have an opportunity to make Quesco Fresco cheese in addition to being able to sample a number of other cheeses. Lunch will be prepared for the class featuring different kinds of cheese dishes.

Volunteers needed for Day for Kids
The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam will hold a Day for Kids event from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sept. 25 at the Sweet Home branch.
To make this event truly amazing for the participants, a minimum of 100 adult volunteers are needed. Sweet Home area service clubs and organizations are encouraged to be part of the challenge by recruiting volunteers. Earn fame, bragging rights and a banner in the gym for a year, if your club/organization wins. Cut-off date to register volunteers is Friday, Sept. 12.

Area half-K run to
feature superheroes
Can you run (or walk) a Half K? Yep, you read that right – .31 miles.
Willamette Manor Assisted Living will hold a Superhero Half K and Wine Dash at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, on a course stretching from the American Legion to the Lebanon Elks Club.
Participants are urged to dress up as superheroes. The event includes a champagne brunch at the American Legion and a barbecue at the Elks Club.

Women’s Bible
studies beginning
Community-wide Bible studies sponsored by Mid-Valley Women of Christ will begin Sept. 15 in 15 cities in the Mid-Willamette Valley.
The fall study will feature a nine-week video series by teacher/author Beth Moore, entitled “Children of the Day,” based upon I and II Thessalonians.
A total of 27 host churches throughout the mid-Willamette Valley will offer 31 different class times. The free course, open to all women, includes video presentations, discussion groups and homework. Optional study guides are available for minimal purchase at host churches. Some studies provide childcare.

Low Vision Support Group Sept. 17
The Low Vision Support Group of Linn County will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2 p.m., at the Albany Senior Center, 490 Water St. in Albany.
The speaker will be Annie Holsworth, a blind person, who will speak on “Tricks and Tips” for people with low vision, or no vision, to use in getting along in a world made for people with sight. She’ll include her personal story, which began 60 years ago at the age of 11 when diagnosed with a juvenile type of macular degeneration called “Stargardtz.” She’ll also share how she has socially adapted to being blind.
Holsworth has taught at the Oregon School for the Blind as an assistive technology teacher, and has served as a member on the boards of Oregon Talking books, and The Oregon Commission for the Blind. She now has her own technology business, The Joy of Screen Reading. She teaches keyboarding skills, Microsoft Word, e-mail and how to navigate the Internet.
All are welcome to attend. There will be light refreshments and a door prize.

Walk for the Cause Sept. 27 in SH
Sweet Home will hold its annual satellite Walk for the Cause, in support of breast cancer treatment and detection, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, beginning at City Hall, 1140 12th Ave.
This will be a pet- and family-friendly event. Local organizations, businesses and groups are encouraged to form teams and participate.
The route will start at City Hall and cover less than two miles on flat sidewalks along Main and Long streets. Four-legged participants are welcome. Those who don’t feel challenged by the length are welcome to repeate the circuite.
Registration is $10 for ages 12 and up. Registered participants will be entered in a drawing for two three-day admission passes to the 2015 Oregon Jamboree. Additional awards will be presented for “Most Team Members,” “Pinkest Team or Walker” and “Pinkest Pooch.” Random door prize winners will be posted at several stations along the route, with prizes to be picked up at the end of the walk.
Pre-registration is appreciated, but same-day registration will be held from 10 to 10:25 a.m. on the day of the event.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu
Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, Sept. 12, is shoyu chicken or homestyle pork patty with gravy, Lyonnaise potatoes, broccoli cuts, sunflower seed bread and watermelon.
The menu for Monday, Sept. 15, is chicken a la king or beef liver and onions, whipped potatoes, green peas, multigrain bread and chilled peaches.
The menu for Tuesday, Sept. 16, is shaved turkey or ham sandwich half on wheat bread, corn chowder, country coleslaw and butterscotch fluff.
