Local dam road
closures continue
The roads over Green Peter and Foster Dams will be closed at various times this month for spillway gate work.
The Foster Dam Road is expected to be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 and Monday, Sept. 29.
At Green Peter, a public closure of the entire area from Quartzville Road on the north bank to the private property fence/gauge on the south bank, including the North Viewpoint and Billings Park, will be in effect. The road over the dam will be reduced to one 12-foot lane through Sept. 30, and will be closed entirely Oct. 1 to Nov. 30. The 12-foot lane will resume Dec. 1 through mid-February.

Walk for the Cause Sept. 27 in SH
Sweet Home will hold its annual satellite Walk for the Cause, in support of breast cancer treatment and detection, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, beginning at City Hall, 1140 12th Ave.
This will be a pet- and family-friendly event. Local organizations, businesses and groups are encouraged to form teams and participate.
The route will start at City Hall and cover less than two miles on flat sidewalks along Main and Long streets. Four-legged participants are welcome. Those who don’t feel challenged by the length are welcome to repeat the circuit.
Registration is $10 for ages 12 and up. Registered participants will be entered in a drawing for two three-day admission passes to the 2015 Oregon Jamboree. Additional awards will be presented for “Most Team Members,” “Pinkest Team or Walker” and “Pinkest Pooch.” Random door prize winners will be posted at several stations along the route, with prizes to be picked up at the end of the walk.
Pre-registration is appreciated, but same-day registration will be held from 10 to 10:25 a.m. on the day of the event.

Nazarene church
A gospel concert will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Sweet Home Church of the Nazarene, 415 Holley Road (Highway 228).

Symphony to play
this weekend
The Willamette Valley Symphony Orchestra will perform works by Mozart, Haydn and Schubert during its first concerts of the 2014-15 season, on Sept. 27 in Albany and Sept. 28 in Corvallis.
Performers include cellist Keith Scofield, who will perform Mozart’s “Serenade No. 6 in D Major,” “Serenata Notturna,” with a quartet of principals.
Performances are Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1115 28th Ave. SW, Albany; and Sunday, Sept. 28, at 4 p.m. at Ashbrook Independent School, 4045 Research Way, Corvallis. Tickets are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors over 65 and students 12 and up, including college students. Children under 12 are free.

VFW to hold ‘Tool Crew Auction’
The Sweet Home VFW will hold its Annual Tool Crew Auction (formerly known as the S.L.A.V.E. Auction), Saturday, Sept. 27.
Dinner will be at 5:30 p.m., with the auction at 6:30 p.m. Every year members of the VWF and Auxiliary offer services to a high bidder. Services include washing cars, walking dogs and cats, mowing grass, painting a house, washing windows, tending bar, sewing, cooking, shopping and much more. At this time they are soliciting members of the community to donate a service. On Sept. 27 they will auction off the services.
Professional auctioneer Paul Thompson, from the Woodburn Auction, will serve as auctioneer for the evening.

Freeway paving delays next week
A night-time freeway paving project around the I-5/Highway 20 interechange at Exit 233 will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28 and run through the week, from 8 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
The Oregon Department of Transportation grind and pave areas on the ramp, bridge deck and “fly over” section; and U.S. 20 from I-5 to Highway 99. The plan is to also perform a deck seal on the bridge.
Both U.S. 20 and OR 99E will have lane closures starting at 8 p.m. on Sept. 28. Motorists can expect up to 20-minute delays with two-way traffic controlled by flaggers. Motorists should consider an alternative route or expect delays.
Lifeguard training
offered at pool
Sign-ups for American Red Cross lifeguard training will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29 at the Sweet Home Community Pool.
The class is limited to six participants. It will include CPR/AED and first aid for professional rescuers, and lifeguard training. Participants must be 15 years old, be able to swim 300 yards consecutively, retrieve a 10-pound object submerged in 10 feet of water and swim 20 yards with that object, and tread water for two minutes using only their legs. They must also attend all five class sessions, which run from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Fridays, Oct. 3 through Oct. 31.
Cost is $125, which includes all fees.

Good News Club at local school
A weekly after-school Good News Club will begin Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 2:50 to 3:50 p.m. at Hawthorne School.
The free interdenominational Bible club, sponsored by Child Evangelism Fellowship, will include missionary stories, games and more. Children must have permission from a parent or guardian before attending. Permission forms are available outside the school office. Children grades kindergarten through 6 are welcome.

Library stained glass open house
Sweet Home Library will hold an open house from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 30, to celebrate the installation of its new set of stained glass windows at 1101 13th Ave.
The public is invited to visit and chat with window designer Chuck Franklin of Portland, who will be present. During the week of Sept. 27 through Oct. 4 the library lights will be left on for those who want to drive by and view the window display from the outside.
B&G Club to hold ‘Paris’ night out
The Boys and Girls Club of the Greater Santiam will hold “Ladies Night Off! A Night in Paris” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 305 S. 5th St. in Lebanon.
Enjoy shopping in the Streets of Paris Boutique, plenty of food and beverages, the greatly anticipated purse auction, pampering stations, live entertainment, and more. New this year is the “embellished stilletto,” so participants are encouraged to get their design on and create or find an amazing pair of heels.

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, Sept. 26, is roast turkey or pork with gravy, whipped potatoes with gravy, country trio vegetables, dill wheat bread and frosted cake.
The menu for Monday, Sept. 29, is chicken tetrazzini or beef chili with beans, chuckwagon corn, broccoli ranch slaw, wheat dinner roll and rhubarb applesauce.
The menu for Tuesday, Sept. 30, is spaghetti with meat sauce or Southwest omelet bake, Italian blend vegetables, tossed salad, cracked wheat roll and peaches.
