Local grief support group for women

A Women’s Grief Support Group meets every other Friday night at Calvary Baptist Church, 1042 Pleasant Valley Road. The next meeting will be at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15.

The group aims to provide a safe space to acknowledge grief, find others who have suffered in similar ways, be heard, and share in mutual support and healing for life’s hardest losses. Participants are there to help begin the healing process.

While many participants are of Christian faith, all faiths are welcome. There will be no preaching and absolutely no judgment.

The group was created by and for women. Counseling can be coordinated with a chaplain and a men’s group could be created, as interest is expressed.

Trout fishing class offered in Albany

Learn how to fish for Oregon’s most popular game fish – trout – in  three separate Trout 101 classes to be offered on Saturday, Jan. 16, at Sportsman’s Warehouse (1351 Waverly Drive SE) in Albany.

Start times will be staggered (9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m.), each with a maximum capacity of 10 participants to allow for social distancing.

Each class begins with about two hours of classroom time, where instructors will cover where to go, how to start, gear you need and how to clean and process what you catch. Then participants head to a nearby pond to test their trout fishing skills with help from ODFW personnel and Angler Education Instructors.

ODFW will bring all needed fishing gear, but participants are welcome to bring their own fishing setups and lures if they prefer.

Cost to register is $20. Register at ODFW’s licensing page, odfw.huntfishoregon.com/login.

Since the class includes fishing, everyone 12 years of age and older who attends must have a valid angling license. Purchase online or at a license agent (including Sportsman’s Warehouse) before the class. An annual angling license is $44 for adult residents, a combo license for kids age 12-17 is $10.

All participants must wear masks.

More detailed instructions on what to expect at the class will be provided after registration.
