Samaritan to hold annual Baby Blast
Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital will present its sixth annual Baby Blast “baby shower” with free health checks for babies, as well as prizes and snacks, from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in conference rooms A-D.

ODOT to discuss

Representatives of the Oregon Department of Transportation will speak at the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Forum Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Career Training Center, 525 N. Santiam Hwy.
Frannie Brindle and Brian Morey of ODOT will address new safety improvements on Highway 34 and HB217, the “Keep Oregon Moving Transportation Bill,” which passed last year and establishes a new dedicated source of funding, the Statewide Transportation Improvement Fund, to expand public transportation service in Oregon. Those include $20 million in upgrades to Highway 20 between Albany and Corvallis.
Cost for lunch is $15 and RSVPs are required. The menu will be lasagna, green beans, breadsticks, tossed salad and brownies.

Square dance fest at Expo Jan. 26-28
The Oregon Mid-Winter Square and Round Dance Festival of 2018, titled “Dancin’ the Night Away,” will be held Friday, Jan. 26, through Sunday, Jan. 28, at the Linn County Expo Center in Albany.
Presale ribbon adult dancers admission is $45, youth dancers are $25 per person, and spectators can watch for free.

Symphony film
at OSU Feb. 2
Willamette Valley Symphony will perform works by Copland, Bloch and Schumann Feb. 17 and 18.
Concerts are at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Albany First United Methodist Church, 1115 28th Ave. SW, and Sunday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. at Ashbrook Independent School, 4045 Research Way in Corvallis.
Cellist Noah Seitz will perform in Bloch’s Schelomo. Also on the program are Copland’s An Outdoor Overture, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 1.

Health Career day
for teens Feb. 3
Local teens are invited to participate in the Lebanon Health Career Ladder from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at COMP-NW, 200 Mullins Drive.
The free event is one of a series of free Saturday Academies in which COMP-Northwest clinicians, scientists, medical students, and our community partners engage the whole family in science activities to educate and build skills and confidence for students from Lebanon and surrounding communities in grades 6-10. The goal is to provide opportunities for students to create, explore, and develop college and career goals and objectives. Others will be held March 10 and April 21.
All sessions are held at COMP-Northwest in Lebanon. Lunch is provided for all attending. Adult accompaniment of students is required as participation from parents, guardians or designated adults is a vital part of the experience.

Mary’s Peak orchid
show Saturday
Mary’s Peak Orchid Society is holding its annual orchid show and sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3 at Garland Nursery, 5470 NE Hwy. 20 between Albany and Corvallis.
Dozens of blooming orchids will be on display, and numerous vendors will be selling orchid plants, materials and books. Repotting will be available for a small fee. Admission and advice are free.
Free Introduction to genealogy series
The Sweet Home Genealogical Society will show three 30-minute video lectures by Professor John Philip Colletta, a genealogist. This will be the last three videos of the series, and will cover the following topics: searcing your ancestors’ backyards, assembling an account of your discoveries, and extending your family tree overseas.

Linn-Benton Community College will hold a College Night open house from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 5 at in Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

OSU to offer class
on starting farm
Oregon State University is offering a class for those considering launching a small farm enterprise.
The course will teach about current opportunities in small-scale agriculture, explore objectives, assess personal and financial resources, conduct preliminary market research, and teach about farm business finances.
The course includes creative exercises, research, class discussions, and interviews with local farm-business owners.
The four-course series will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27 at Mary’s River Grange, 24707 Grange Hall Rd. in Philomath.

Ladies night for B&G Club Feb. 7
A fund-raiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam will kick off with a champagne toast at 5:30 p.m., followed by an auction starting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 at the Boulder Falls Event Center.

Sweetheart Run Feb. 10 at Sankey
The City of Sweet Home Parks & Recreation Department is hosting its 5K/10K Sweetheart Run at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 10 at Sankey Park.
The “Sweetheart Run” is chip timed, and will include finisher medals and shirts.
A one-mile Kids Fun Run starts at 10 a.m. and is free for children 10 and under. The 5K starts at 10:30 a.m., and registrants before Feb. 1 cost $20 per Sweet Home resident, $25 per non-resident; $13 per resident in a group, $23 per non-resident in a group.
The 10K starts at 10:30 a.m., and registrants before Feb. 1 cost $25 per Sweet Home resident, $35 per non-resident; $21 per resident in a group, $31 per non-resident in a group.

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, Jan. 26, is turkey apple meatball or baked ham with mustard sauce, blackeyed peas, spinach Romaine salad, cornbread and zucchini brownie.
The menu on Monday, Jan. 29, is BBQ chicken breast or beef liver and onions, Colcannon potatoes, country trio vegetables, cracked wheat bread and gelatin jewels with whipped topping.
The menu on Tuesday, Jan. 30, is breaded baked fish with Tartar sauce or pork patty with gravy, whipped potatoes, peas, onion bread and frosted spice cake.
Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
