Community choir

seeking singers

The Lebanon Community Chorus is recruiting singers for its Spring Pops Concert to be performed on Sunday, April 26, in the First Assembly of God church in Lebanon.

The pops concert program will cinclude favorite rock and pop songs spanning the last 40 years, featuring artists such as Queen, Neil Diamond, The Beatles and Elton John. Selections from contemporary artists Ellie Goulding, Bruno Mars, and Cee-lo Green will also be on the program.

Rehearsals began last week First Christian Church, 170 E. Grant in Lebanon, but the chorus is still accepting singers, with no auditions required. Dues are $15 to participate, with limited scholarships available.

Shea Point cleanup needs volunteers

A volunteer clean-up at Shea Point will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, and Saturday, Jan. 17, to remove overgrowth, blackberries, and trash from the Shea Point viewpoint and trail corridor.

Some gloves and hand tools will be available to use but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own. Tools that would be especially useful are pole saws, rakes, and loppers.

Free gardening class

at LBCC Lebanon

Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center is offering a free Winter Gardening Series that meets Thursdays from noon to 12:50 p.m. at the Lebanon Center Annex, 44 Industrial Way.

Spend your noon hour sharpening your gardening skills and learning new techniques. Taught by OSU certified Master Gardeners, the series, which started Jan. 8, covers a wide variety of subjects of interest to the home gardener, with a different topic covered each week. Symphony concert

this weekend

Willamette Valley Orchestra will perform a chamber orchestra concert Saturday, Jan. 17, and Sunday, Jan. 18, in Albany and Corvallis.

The program will include Charles Gounod’s “Petite Symphonie for Winds,” J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 and Carl Maria von Weber’s Symphonie No. 1 in C Major.

Saturday’s concert will be at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 1115 28th Ave. SW in Albany.

Sunday’s will be at 4 p.m. At the Ashbrook Independent School, 4045 Research Way in Corvallis.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Youths under 12 are free.

Bible studies begin

locally next week

Community-Wide Bible Studies sponsored by Mid-Valley Women of Christ will begin Monday, Jan. 19, in Sweet Home and 14 other cities in the mid-Willamette Valley.

The free study, open to all women, will feature a seven-week video series by teacher/author, Priscilla Shirer, entitled “Discerning The Voice of God,” discussion groups and homework.

Optional study guides are available for minimal purchase at host churches. Participants may register now to attend through the Mid Valley Women of Christ website http://www.midvalleywomenofchrist.org and view a video clip of the study. Host churches throughout the mid-Willamette Valley will offer 30 different class times.

SafeHaven to hold

kids movie night

SafeHaven Humane Society will host a Pets and Pajamas Movie Night featuring the movie “How to Train Your Dragon 2” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23.

Children in grades K through middle school are invited to join some of SafeHaven’s adoptable animals for the movie night, which will include pizza and beverages.

Cost is $10 per child.

For families, the fee is $10 for the first child and $5 for each family member after that.

Parents are not required to stay for the movie. Children are welcome to wear their pajamas.

The event will be held at the humane society, which is located at 32220 Old Hwy 34 in Tangent.

The road over Foster Dam will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, for removal of floating debris from the spillway area.

Square dance fest at Expo Jan. 24-26

The Oregon Mid-Winter Festival 2015, themed “DANCE DANCE DANCE,” will be held Jan. 24-26 at the Linn County Expo Center on Knox Butte Road in Albany.

Square and round dancing for a wide variety of skill levels will be offered.

Cost for adult dancers will be $45; youths will be $25, all good for the full three-day festival. Spectators are welcome to view events at no charge.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ at SHJH

Sweet Home Junior High Drama Club will present “Beauty and the Beast” on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30 and 31 in the Sweet Home High School Auditorium.

Show times are 6 p.m., with an extra 2 p.m. performance on Saturday.

Admission is $2 for students (K-12) and $4 for adults. Children too young for kindergarten get in free. Roses will available for $3 each or two for $4. All proceeds go towards the production of the play.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Jan. 16, is herb chicken patty with gravy or BBQ smokehouse chop, Lyonnaise potatoes, herbed carrots, rye bread and chocolate cake with chocolate frosting.

No meal will be served Monday, Jan. 19, due to the Martin Luther King Day holiday.

The menu for Tuesday, Jan. 20, is breaded chicken breast or meatloaf, both with gravy, whipped potatoes, lima beans, cornmeal bread and rhubarb applesauce.
