No lunch served at schools July 4, 5
Sweet Home School District offers free lunch and breakfast for kids age 18 and younger at various locations during the summer, through Aug. 23.
No lunch will be served July 4-5 and Aug. 1-2.
There is no cost and reservations are not required. Meals include fresh fruit, vegetables and milk.
Lunch is served from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at Foster School.
Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Little Promises, at Pleasant Valley and Ridgeway roads.
Lunch is served from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Sweet Home High School, Hawthorne and Oak Heights schools.
Lunch is served from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at Ashbrook Park, Northside Park and at the Skate Park on Long Street, next to the Sweet Home School District headquarters.
Breakfast will be served from 9 to 9:30 a.m. at Sweet Home High School and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Little Promises.
Jazz and blues at Marks Ridge Friday
Marks Ridge Winery’s summer concert series will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, July 5, with a performance by vocalist Nicole Stromsoe and guitarist Dorian Michael at 29255 Berlin Road.
Stromsoe sings an eclectic mix of classic soul, jazz and blues. She will be accompanied by Michael’s fingerstyle guitar.
Cost is $10 per person. Seating is open-air at bistro tables, or bring a blanket and a chair. Patrons are welcome to bring their own food, but outside alcohol is not allowed.

Area artists’ work featured at gallery
Painter/collage artist Rob Robinson and painter/printmaker Cheryl French, both of Albany, will be the featured artists during July at Gallery Calapooia, 222 First Ave. W. in downtown Albany.
The gallery’s First Friday Reception, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 5, will feature the work of Robinson and French, as well as 18 other mid-valley artists. Beer, wine and snacks will be served.
In this show, French has drawn inspiration from looking through her old sketchbooks and turned her drawings, including some created while living in Ireland, into paintings. These most recent works are oil paintings.
French’s best known local works are the six column murals in the Children’s Room in the Albany Main Library. She has also worked as a teaching artist in local schools, libraries and public events.
Robinson paints with acrylics and makes collages using Japanese handmade papers and other papers and materials. He has been experimenting with a double-sided translucent collage, which will be on display. What you see depends on which side of the collage you are looking at and the way the light is striking it.
He is former president of the statewide Watercolor Society of Oregon. Gallery Calapooia hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Tree farmers to host open house
Linn County’s tree farmers of the year, Tim and Kathy Otis, invite the public to tour a small woodlands property at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 6, on Ingram Road, 1.2 miles up from Highway 20. Tree tour signs will guide the way.
As much as 370 acres of forest land between Lebanon and Brownsville has been managed by the same family for more than 150 years. The day’s activities include talks about the family history, and discussions about recent tree-related activities.
The Linn County chapter of the Oregon Small Woodlands Association co-hosts the annual event. Guests are asked to bring a potluck dish and service. Drinks will be supplied.

Linn County Master Gardeners will discuss “Growing Your Own Tea” at next month’s Lebanon Second Monday Lunchtime Gardening Series.

Caregivers self-care class at hospice
Samaritan Evergreen Hospice invites caregivers to a Mind-Body Medicine skills course from noon to 2 p.m. on Mondays from July 8 to Aug. 26, at 4600 Evergreen St. SE, Albany.
The series is open to anyone involved in caring for a loved one.
Each session will focus on a self-care technique proven to reduce tensions and fatigue and increase resilience, calmness and joy. Participants will discover a variety of ways to decrease feelings of hopelessness, depression and anxiety and to increase well-being, control and joy.
All discussions will be confidential, open and respectful with times to work on restoring energy. Through a supportive group of others who know well the demands of caregiving, we’ll practice ways to relax and cope with the demands of life.
Each group will start with a basic breathing meditation and a check-in. There is a short lesson, followed by time to practice together and share about everyone’s experiences. Caregivers will be able to participate at their own pace and comfort level.

Extension seminar on growing seeds
Oregon State University Small Farms Program will hold a Crop Talks 2019 seminar on “Seed Production” from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Adaptive Seeds in the Sweet Home area.
Crop Talks are farmer-to-farmer educational opportunities that consist of a tour of a farm by the farmer and a discussion about their area of expertise or interest during the growing season. These are opportunities to get out into someone’s field, see their practices in action, ask questions, and connect with other local farmers while doing it. The event is free.

PEO offers frozen berries fundraiser
Sweet Home PEO, Chapter DD is offering freshly picked marionberries, strawberries and blueberries, flash frozen in nine-pound plastic pails as a fundraiser.
All proceeds from the berry sale provide educational scholarships, loans and grants to women in the local community.
Orders will be collected through July 10. Those purchasing berries will be able to pick them up in Sweet Home from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10.

Rotary Club golf tourney July 12
The Sweet Home Rotary Club will hold its third annual golf tournament Friday, July 12, at Pineway Golf Course.
The tournament, a nine-hole, best ball, four-person scramble, will start at 4:30 p.m. Cost is $60 per person. which covers green fees, cart rental and dinner. All proceeds go towards the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Student Scholarships and world projects.
Last year’s winning team, from the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District and the Police Department, is challenging all comers to try and take their trophy away from them.
This is a great way to start the Sportsman’s Holiday Weekend.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu
Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, July 5, is shoyu chicken or meatloaf with brown gravy, whipped potatoes, mixed vegetables, wheat bread and chocolate pudding.
The menu on Monday, July 8, is herbed chicken patty or liver and onions, both with gravy, Delmonico potatoes, broccoli, wheat bread and peanut butter bar.
The menu on Tuesday, July 9, is beef and black bean chili or turkey tetrazzini, herbed carrots, spinach romaine salad, multigrain roll and ice cream cup.
Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
