fund-raiser for cancer patient
Coffee
Hut will conduct a fund-raiser for a cancer patient, who grew up in
Sweet Home, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at 2450 Santiam
Highway.
Half
of all proceeds and all tips will be donated to help former Sweet
Home resident Raquel (Gonzalez) Ndzeidze, who is battling a rare
type of cancer for which there are no treatments in the United
States.
Ndzeidze,
who lives in Corvallis and works at Oregon State University, is
seeking to raise $65,000 for eight weeks of treatment in Mexico. The
deadline for raising the funds is June 19.

Professional
genealogist Hannah Allen will speak at the Linn Genealogical
Society’s monthly meeting at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the

topic will be “Bury the Dead, Not the Living: Organizing Your
Records.”

Portland Metro’s Cemetery Advisory Committee, and teaches monthly
genealogy workshops at OHS, along with speaking at local and national
events.

Mother
Earth fair this weekend
A
Mother Earth News Fair will be held from June 6 and 7 at the Linn
County Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road in Albany.
The
fair is a family-friendly sustainable living event that features 200
hands-on workshops and demonstrations from experts on real food,
organic gardening, homesteading, renewable energy, green building and
remodeling, DIY projects, small-scale livestock, green
transportation, natural health, and related topics.
Hours
are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on June 6 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 7.
Pre-order weekend wristband passes for $20. Passes will cost $30 at
the gate. Children 17 and under get in free.

her Berkey’s Organic Blueberries, and guest speaker will be Lois
Williams from Lacy, Wash. Williams is a published author and workshop
leader who will share her story about how she found fulfillment after
discovering that being a people pleaser wasn’t enough.

Lebanon
Cruz ’N’ car show June 13
The
Lebanon Chamber of Commerce will hold its second annual Classic Car
Cruz ’N’ June 13 at Cheadle Lake.
The
event begins at 8:30 a.m., at the park, with an eight-mile “Cruise
the Gut,” followed by the actual car show at 10 a.m., with 18
trophies ready to take home.

Sweet
Home B&G Club summer camp
The
Sweet Home branch of the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Santiam
will hold summer camp June 15 through Aug. 21.
Staff-child
ratios will be 1 to 18 or smaller, so children will get individual
attention. Themes will change weekly and each week will include at
least one “adventure” special activity held at the club or a
nearby location.
Adventures
include two “Arts in the Park” days, a ride on the Santiam
Excursion Train, OHSU Brains activity, a remote operated vehicle,
and more. Activities will include free lunch provided by the Sweet
Home School District (see page 3).

Tractor
training course at LBCC
A
three-day Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Training will be held at
Linn-Benton Community College in Albany starting June 16.
Popular
among youth ages 14-18, the State of Oregon permits youth starting at
age 14 to operate power-driven farm machinery for employers, provided
they pass training in a vocational agricultural safety program.
LBCC’s
course places emphasis on safety, and is operated in accordance with
federal regulations. The class involves some initial hands-on
training with farm machinery.
The
class meets Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50
p.m. Cost for this non-credit course is $96.50 and includes
materials.
Pre-registration
is required and limited seating is available. Registration packets
are available at all LBCC centers or online at
http://www.linnbenton.edu/tractor-safety.
Students
and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form to be
submitted to the Albany office within 24 hours of registration.

for
teens at LBCC
Free
Summer Career Academies for high school students are being offered at
Linn-Benton Community College during the week of June 22.
Students
age 15 and up get hands-on experience in careers including drafting
and engineering 3D modeling, machine tool computer numerical control
and design, mechatronics robotics and microcontrollers, and welding.
Sessions
run during the week of June 22 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500

on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the
Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Fridays.
The
Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time
diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested
donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea
upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The
lunch menu on Friday, June 5, is turkey loaf with cranberry glaze or
pork chops with gravy, Lyonnaise potatoes, glazed carrots, sunflower
seed bread and chocolate chip bar.
The
menu for Monday, June 8, is Oriental rice with pork or chicken
pomodoro, peas and carrots, spinach Romaine salad, caraway rye roll
and peanut butter bar.
The
menu for Tuesday, June 9, is homestyle pork patty with gravy or beef
Swiss-style patty, creamed potatoes, broccoli cuts, onion bread and
