AROUND TOWN MARCH 11, 2015

Help

patients

with

pillow parts

Anyone

looking for an easy way to help patients at Samaritan Lebanon

Community Hospital can donate fabric to the hospital auxiliary for

comfort pillows.

Auxiliary

volunteers sew together small pillows that hospital patients can use

for a little extra comfort. Patients can also use these pillows to

ease abdominal pain from coughing.

The

auxiliary is specifically looking for polyester double-knit, cotton

and cotton blend woven fabrics, in pieces one-half yard long and

bigger. For more information, call Roxie Snyder, volunteer services

manager, at (541) 451-7062.

Kids

invited to do animal posters

SafeHaven

Humane Society invites young artists to enter its first-ever poster

contest.

The contest

offers a great opportunity for children and animal lovers to use

their creativity to promote the humane treatment of animals.

Children

in grades K-12 from throughout Oregon are invited to participate. The

deadline for entries is May 1. Winners will be notified by May

22. Winners and their immediate families will be invited to a

special awards dinner where they will receive their prize and an

award honoring their artwork. Artwork will be displayed at the

shelter.

Poster themes are based on SafeHaven Humane Society’s

mission and vary by grade level:

nKindergarten through second grade: “My pet is my family” – Pets

have feelings and love to be with their families. Include them in

family activities.

nThird through fifth grade: “Be safe when meeting a new animal” –

Always ask your parents and an animal’s owner before you approach

an animal. Then let new animals approach you if they want to.

nSixth through ninth grade: “Choose the right pet for you” – Not

every pet is perfect for everyone. Choose a pet that requires the

level of commitment you are able to give.

nTenth through 12th grade: “Advocate for animals” —

Volunteer at your local animal shelter, be a foster parent for

animals in need, and report any neglect or abuse you see.

First

through third place will be awarded for each grade level, and an

overall grand prize winner will be announced. The grand prize winner

will receive a tablet (approximately a $150 value). First-place

winners will receive a $75 gift card; second place a $50 gift card,

and third place a $25 gift card.

All

entries become property of SafeHaven Human Society and will not be

mailed back. Non-winning entries may be picked up after May 23. For a

copy of the entry rules and an entry form, visit safehavenhumane.org

and select the Kids tab or call (541) 926.2924.
