Scholarships for forestry students

Students looking to pursue studies in forestry are invited to apply for 2016-17 Small Woodlands Scholarships.

The Linn County Small Woodlands Association will award four renewable $1,000 Oregon college scholarships to students graduating from Linn County high schools who plan to pursue forestry or forestry-related natural resources fields of study.

Application forms, which must be returned postmarked or e-mailed by April 18, are available at all of the county’s high schools, at Linn-Benton Community College, and from Katie Kohl ([email protected]).

Medicare class for new beneficiaries

New Medicare beneficiaries are invited to a class that will cover the basics of Medicare parts A, B, C, and D offered from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, March 17, at Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Annex, 44 Industrial Way, Lebanon.

Reservations are required.

This event is designed for anyone who will be eligible for Medicare within a few months or is new to Medicare. Current beneficiaries who would like a better understanding of their Medicare benefits and options for changes or additional coverage in 2016 will also find this class valuable. Spouses and other relatives are welcome to attend.

Genealogy forum

Sweet Home Genealogical Society will hold its 36th Annual Genealogical Workshop Friday and Saturday, March 18-19, at the Genealogical Library, 1123 Kalmia St.

Friday’s session will start with registration at 10 a.m., with the first session at 10:45. Sessions include “What’s New in Genealogy” and computer instruction led by Paul Aziz.

Saturday’s session will start with registration at 9:30 a.m., with the first session at 10. Topics include “Genealogy Detective – Crossing the Pond” and “What To Do After We Cross the Pond.”

Cost per day is $12.50 for current SHGS members or $15 for non-members.

A lunch sandwich and salad bar will be available each day for $5 or participants are welcome to bring their own brown-bag lunches or eat at local cafes. Coffee, tea and bottled water will be complimentary.

Ham Bingo this

Saturday evening

Ham Bingo will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Sweet Home High School Cafeteria.

The event will benefit the SHHS SAFE Committee, SHHS Forestry Club and the Calapooia Critters 4-H Club.

Cost to play is 25 cents per card/game or $20 to play all night with four cards. Door prizes and raffle drawings will be offered. Winners need to be present.

This is a family event, but minors must be accompanied by a parent. Concessions will be available.

Flea mart, bunco

at SH Vets Club

Sweet Home Veterans Club will host a variety of St. Patrick’s Day events Saturday, March 19, at 580 Main St.

A Picc-A-Dilly Flea Market will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., sponsored by AmVets Post 13.

Crafts, collectibles, Carharts and miscellaneous parts will be on the sales tables. The public is invited. Admission is free.

Bunco will be held, with sign-ins at 4 p.m. Games start at 5 p.m. White elephant is $1 a bag and the evening includes “snack potluck” and prizes. Early sign-ups are recommended.

‘Messiah’ with Mormon Choir

Local Churches of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will host a live-stream performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir of Handel’s “Messiah” oratorio at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 25.

Instructions, sheet music, a music video and the submission form are posted at virtualchoir.mormon.org.

The live-stream concert will take place at 6:30 p.m. and fans are invited to sing along during the Internet live stream of the performance, available at LDS.org, mormontabernaclechoir.org/messiah, or the cable TV Mormon Channel.

The concert will also be screened at local Mormon churches, including 1155 22nd Ave. in Sweet Home, 1955 South 5th St. in Lebanon and 1111 North Main St. in Brownsville. Participants are welcome to watch, listen to and sing along at the concert.

The live stream will be available to other churches from the choir’s website through Monday, April 4, at 11:59 p.m., MST to accommodate time zones and schedules. It will not be downloadable.

Rotary Egg Hunt

March 26 at park

The Sweet Home Rotary Club will hold its 25th annual Sweet Home Easter Egg Hunt for children through 10 years of age at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26 at Sankey Park.

The Easter Bunny, with help from Rotary Club members, will hide over 3,000 candy and toy filled eggs. There will also be approximately 300 eggs containing prize certificates donated by local businesses.

To facilitate all ages, the park will be divided for different age groups. The event is sponsored by the Sweet Home Rotary Club.

Hospital offers

lifestyle program

A team of physicians and dietitians at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital will lead a Complete Health Improvement Program class starting in March for people struggling to get their weight or overall health under control.

Samaritan staff will lead the 18-session CHIP class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from March 29 to May 26, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the hospital. Introductory cost for the class is $200, due at the time of registration.

CHIP is a lifestyle medicine program scientifically proven to help people improve their blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, BMI, sleep, resilience and depression.

The class integrates optimal nutrition, exercise and behavioral psychology principles and tools to help participants achieve their health goals.

The hospital will host a free informational class as well at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, at the hospital in conference room C.

LBCC offering CPR

certification class

Earn your CPR certification card through Linn-Benton Community College’s CPR training class.

The CPR certification is good for clinical placements up to two years.

Classes will be held April 2, May 7, and June 4 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at LBCC’s Albany Campus, Calapooia Center, room 212. Cost is $95, supplies included.

This CPR class qualifies for LBCC’s requirements in the following programs: Dental Assistant, Diagnostic Imaging, Nursing/CNA, Occupational Therapy, Medical Assistant, Polysomnography, Phlebotomy, and Pharmacy Technician.

Citizen’s Academy

Sweet Home Police Department will hold its annual Citizen’s Academy March 29 – May 10.

The seven-week academy is held Tuesdays, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Sweet Home Police Department. An optional field tour of the Linn County Jail and the 911 Center will be offered during the eighth week.

The course provides an insider’s look into the Police Department and the criminal justice system. Speakers include police officers and other staff members, who will tell how they manage the business side of law enforcement and internal affairs.

Staff will relate stories about their work experiences, offer tips about crime prevention and public safety, and how it feels to be the person “behind the badge.”

Space is limited, register by March 25.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, March 18, is turkey or egg salad sandwich half on wheat bread, vegetarian vegetable soup, carrot slaw and spiced pears.

The menu for Monday, March 21, is lima beans and ham or shepherd’s pie, herbed carrots, spinach Romaine salad, French roll and butterscotch bar.

The menu for Tuesday, March 22, is chicken and dumplings or spaghetti and meat sauce with French roll, green peas and onions, Romaine iceberg salad and orange whip.
