Ranger District

offers youth jobs

The Sweet Home Ranger District is recruiting for a five-week summer youth crew program from June 19 to July 21. A second session may be added July 31 through September 1, based on interest and funding.

Northwest Youth Corps has partnered with USDA Forest Service and the Sweet Home Ranger District to create Northwest Youth Corps Community Crew. The crews learn how to build trails, enhance natural habitats, remove invasive plant species and develop many other valuable outdoor skills.

Tuition is $125 per participant and youth will receive a stipend of up to $1,250. The crews work Monday through Friday, an average of 6.5 hours and have one of education daily.

Free Medicare

class at LBCC

A free Medicare Class will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at the Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Annex, 44 Industrial Way, Lebanon.

The class is designed for anyone who will be eligible for Medicare within a few months or is currently using Medicare. The class will give a better understanding of Medicare benefits and options. Spouses and other relatives are welcome to attend.

Love Thy Neighbor

dinner fund-raiser

Home Sweet Home Cafe is hosting a Spagetti Dinner Fund-raiser for Love Thy Neighbor Services from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 23.

The meal will include salad, garlic toast, drink, and dessert.

Cost is $5 for kids, $8 for a regular meal, and $10 for a large meal.

LBCC tractor class next week, in June

Linn-Benton Community College Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety Class will begin 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28 at the Albany campus, Forum building room F-113, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW.

The first three-day class session will meet Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning March 28.

A second three-day class session will meet Friday, Saturday, and Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. beginning June 23.

Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form within 24 hours of registration.

Cost for this non-credit course is $99. Preregistration is required. Students must be at least 14 to register.

OSU forest class

on pollinators

Oregon State University’s College of Forestry will hold a workshop on forest pollinators from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at the CH2MHill Alumni Center on the OSU campus.

Speakers from Oregon State, Washington State and Montana State universities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture will address a variety of topics, including the influence of wildfire severity, salvage logging, herbicides and practical ways to augment blooms for native bees.

The workshop is free and open to the public. Registration is required by March 20 at cpe.forestry.oregonstate.edu/PollinatorWorkshop.

Governor to speak

at Lebanon Forum

Governor Kate Brown will speak at a forum lunch from 11 to 1 p.m. Friday, March 31, at the Boulder Falls Event Center, 505 Mullins Dr.

The lunch will be Chicken Parmesan (chicken breast smothered in marinara sauce and topped with parmesan cheese), pasta, green beans and served with bread sticks. Dessert will be brownies.

Cost is $15 a person. Reservations are required. Reservation deadline is Thursday, March 23.

Gem and Mineral

show April 1-2

The 69th Annual Sweet Home Gem and Mineral Show will be Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 1 and 2 at the Sweet Home High School Gym, 1641 Long St.

The family friendly event features displays of rocks, minerals, fossils, and artisan jewelry. Lapidary artists demonstrate their expert lapidary skills and answer viewers’ questions. The public can bring unknown rock specimens to be identified by a geologist.

Adults can participate in silent auctions, raffles and door prizes. Kids’ activities include art activities, silent auctions, door prizes and raffles.

Vendors offer a wide variety of jewelry, home décor, rock, mineral, and fossil specimens. A wide selection of lapidary supplies will be available. Handicap pairing is available as well as a food cart.

Cost is $.50 per adult. Children 12 and under free with an adult admission.

LBCC offers driver

education classes

Linn-Benton Community College Driver Education will offer classes starting April 3 in Sweet Home.

Classes include Oregon state-mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a one-time parent/student orientation plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. Skills learned could be life-saving.

Cost is $265 for ages 17 and under, $445 for ages 18 and over. Upon successful completion, students under the age of 18 qualify for a car skills testing waiver when obtaining their driver’s license.

Ham Bingo to

boost SHHS, 4-H

A Ham Bingo will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at the Sweet Home High School Cafeteria.

Every bingo wins a ham. The whole family is welcome to attend. Minors must be accompanied by a parent. There will be door prizes and raffle drawings. Concessions are available.

The event is sponsored by SHHS SAFE Committee, SHHS Forestry Club and Calapooia Critters 4H Club.

Cost is $.25 per card per game or $20 for all night (4 cards).

Rotary Easter egg hunt April 15

Sweet Home Rotary will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, at Sankey Park.

The free event is open to children 10 years old and younger. The Easter bunny will be in attendance. A number of eggs will contain special prizes from A&W and McDonald’s restaurants.

The hunting areas will be determined by age category.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, March 24, is cheese and green chile bake or sweet and sour chicken and rice, cut green beans, spinach Romaine salad, wheat dinner roll and banana pudding.

The menu on Monday, March 27, is creamed turkey and vegetable or beef stroganoff, whipped potatoes, seasoned carrots, wheat roll and spiced applesauce.

The menu on Tuesday, March 28, garlic chicken or country fried steak, Colcannon potatoes, mixed vegetables, wheat bread and cookies and cream pudding.

Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and route drivers.
