Health scholarship

deadline Friday

The eeadline to apply for five $1,000 scholarships granted to students pursuing a health care-related career is Friday, March 10.

The scholarships are offered by Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Applicants must have a permanent address in east Linn County and be enrolled and actively attending classes in a program awarding a degree in a health care-related field.

Applications are available at the Volunteer Services office located at the hospital, 525 N. Santiam Hwy.

Along with their application, applicants must also submit: an official transcript that includes Fall Term 2016 grades; a one- to two-page typed statement discussing why the applicant is pursuing a degree in a health field and what his or her goals are; a completed Cost and Resource Estimate Work Sheet; an explanation of any special circumstances, which will help the Scholarship Committee make a fair evaluation (optional); and a letter of recommendation, signed and dated.

Farm management

seminar Thursday

An Introduction to Planning and Record-Keeping for Farm Business Management class will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at the Benton County Sunset Building.

Workshop participants will be introduced to the basic components of a business plan, developing an initial financial projection, keeping key farm financial records, and using these records in combination with plans and projections to manage the farm business.

Apocalyptic play

at OSU theater

Oregon State University Theatre will present Pet Nachtrieb’s apocalyptic comedy, “boom” March 9-11 in the Lab Theatre.

The play features an undergraduate journalism student who responds to a personal ad, with no idea she will end up in a secret underground bunker with a nervously nerdy biology graduate student.

Convinced that doomsday is around the corner, he has prepared himself and one other survivor to repopulate the planet and save humanity.

The witty and wild comedy explores themes of humanity, hope, and the miraculous nature of survival in a hostile universe.

Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 9 through the 11 and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 12. The Lab Theatre is located in Withycombe Hall, 2901 S.W. Campus Way, Corvallis.

Tickets are $8; $6 for seniors; $5 for students/youth; and $4 for OSU students. There is no reserved seating.

Warning system

test siren Saturday

Linn Benton ALERT system will be tested at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11.

The test will cover all of Linn County and the Albany city limits in North Albany, according to Sheriff Bruce Riley.

All traditional land phone lines in the 911 database will receive the message along with those who have registered other devices with the system.

Recipients will be given the option to confirm receipt of the message on each phone or device.

The LB ALERT Emergency Notification System is a mass notification system that allows public safety officials the ability to provide rapid notifications to Linn and Benton County residents of emergencies, evacuations, and other urgent events.

There will be no reason to call the Sheriff Office once you receive the message.

Family Fun Day

at LBCC Saturday

Linn-Benton Community College will hold the 40th annual Family Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, in the LBCC Activities Center gym, 6500 Pacific Blvd.

The event provides support to parenting programs and tuition grants for the more than 2,000 parents in Linn and Benton counties who attend LBCC Parenting Education classes each year.

Activities for children ages one to six include play dough, an obstacle course, crafts, bounce house, face painting, putt-putt golf, used book and toy sale, and more. Admission is free. Activity tickets are .25 cents each.

State garden clubs

meeting in Albany

The Oregon State Federation of Garden Clubs 2017 Spring State Board meeting will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 13 at the Comfort Suites Hotel in Albany.

The two day event will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, at Garlands Nursery in Corvallis for a workshop on landscape design with Lee Powell, followed by a no host dinner at Carrino’s Italian in Albany at 5:30.

Soft robots to visit

next Science Pub

Soft robots will be featured at Corvallis Science Pub at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 13, at the Old World Deli, 341 S.W. 2nd St. in Corvallis.

Yigit Menguc, assistant professor in the Oregon State University College of Engineering, will demonstrate how he uses 3D printing, biodegradable rubber and other materials to produce robots with the agility of geckos and the flexibility of snakes.

Science Pub offers monthly presentation on scientific topics in an atmosphere in which there are no silly questions. Science background is not required. The event, typically held on the second Wednesday each month, is free and open to the public.

‘Hare 2 Wear’ at

After 5 Connection will present “From Hare 2 Wear,” a dinner and a special program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 14 at The Lobby, 661 S. Main St., Lebanon.

Naomi Hibbert of Thedoza’s Angoras will demonstrate the process of creating hand-spun yarn from the bunny to yarn.

Kelly Crandall from Oregon City will share how she went from working as a critical care nurse to becoming a life coach.

LBCC Winter

Choral Concert

Linn-Benton Community College Winter Choral Concert “Cathedral Classics” will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at the Russell Tripp Performance Center in Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Performances include LBCC’s award-winning Concert and Chamber choirs conducted by LBCC Director of Choral Studies Raymund Ocampo and accompanied by Kristin Rorrer, and the a cappella groups Blue Light Special and g.

The concert is an exploration of cathedral and chapel music, with Concert choir performing works of the sanctuary with grand organ and choir pieces, accompanied primarily by organ, and the Chamber choir performing works of the chapel featuring intimate music.

Choral works include “Cantique de Jean Racine,” “The Last Words of David,” “Kyrie from Mass in E flat,” and “Let My Love Be Heard.”

A cappella ensembles will perform works including “Careless Whisper,” “Lose Yourself/Skyfall, Work Song” and “Hold Your Hand.”

fitness classes

Linn-Benton Community College is offering fitness classes through the Sweet Home Center starting April 3.

Classes include Country Heat Live and Full Body Fitness held in Brownsville, and Aquatic Fitness classes held in Sweet Home.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, March 10, is broccoli cheese omelet or chicken pastina, mixed vegetables, spinach Romaine salad, wheat roll and hermit bar.

The menu on Monday, March 13, is cowboy campfire stew or chicken tetrazzini, cut green beans, creamy coleslaw, oatmeal roll and lemon pudding.

The menu on Tuesday, March 14, is chicken lo mein or beef chili with beans, chuckwagon corn, tossed salad, sunflower seed roll and golden fruit cup.
