Watershed Science Pub Wednesday

The South Santiam Watershed Council will host a Science Pub from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Barsideous Brewing, located at 644 South Main St., Lebanon. 

Jeff Clawson will speak about the importance of water quality as it relates to beer brewing in his presentation “Water, the main ingredient in beer.” 

Jeff is the pilot brewery manager at the Department of Food Science and Technology at OSU.  He installed the original OSU research brewery in 1995 and the 2-barrel, five vessel, fully automated brewhouse in 2018. He has been an instructor in Brewing Science since the Fermentation Science Program inception in 1996.

Bill Bartman, co-owner of Barsideous Brewing, will provide a tour of the facilities following the presentation.

The event is free and open to the public.

Oak Heights plans Friday carnival

Oak Heights Elementary PTC will hold its annual carnival fund-raiser Friday, May 18, and seeks donations of items and gift certificates for the auction.

Proceeds will help upgrade playground equipment.

Revelation drama in Brownsville

“The Many Who Saw Heaven,” a dramatic presentation of the book of Revelation as told by the aged Apostle John, will be presented Saturday, May 19, 6:30 p.m., at the Brownsville Christian Church, 117 Main St.

The program is a 90-minute, one-act, word-for-word (New International Version) presentation set in the year 96 A.D.

Ham bingo Friday

for SAFE, forestry

A ham bingo event to benefit the Sweet Home High School SAFE Committee and Forestry Club will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the high school cafeteria.

All night play costs $20, or pay .25 per card per game. Every bingo wins a ham, and there will be door prizes and raffle drawings. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (541) 401-3339.

Art journaling class in Brownsville

An art journaling class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Brownsville Art Center, 255 Main St. Cost is $35 and can be paid at the Art Center Friday thru Saturday, or register online at brownsvilleart.org.

Local artist Wendy Hoffman will show several techniques for journaling about one’s life and experiences using pictures, color, painting, collage, words, etc.

This class will provide the opportunity to create several journal pages using pen and ink, waercolors, stencils, distress oxide, and more to create backgrounds for collage, and will finish with some writing prompts.

Lacemakers invite new participants

The public is invited to the Oregon Trail Lacemakers’ monthly meetings from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19, and Saturday, June 16, at Willamette Oaks Retirement Living (north of Valley River Center).

They meet monthly to make lace by hand (bobbin laces, tatting, needle lace, crochet, knitted lace). Guests are welcome.

Meetings are the third Saturdays of each month.

Scholarship offered by OSU Extension

The Linn County OSU Extension Service offers two LCEA Legacy Scholarships of $1,000 annually. The scholarship is based on residency in the geographical areas served by Linn County Extension, the applicant’s financial need, GPA of 2.75 or higher, involvement in 4-H or other Extension programs, and community involvement and/or work experience.

Cemetery meeting, work day Sunday

Sand Ridge Cemetery’s annual meeting will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 20, at the Sand Ridge Cemetery.

Median work day volunteers welcome

A work party for Sweet Home Beautification will meet at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 22, at 11th Ave-nue and Main Street, next to Key Bank. Any necessary tools and vests will be provided.

Forestry lecture May 23 at OSU

Constance Harrington, research forester with the U.S. Forest Service, will address “How should we manage our forests in the face of uncertainty? What we know and what we don’t know about how trees respond to climate,” in the final installation of the Starker Lectures at 3:30 p.m. on May 23 at Oregon State University.

All lectures are free and open to the public and will be held in the C&E Hall of the LaSells Stewart Center on  the OSU campus.

The Starker Lecture Series is sponsored by the Starker family in memory of T.J. and Bruce Starker, prominent leaders in the development of the Oregon forest products industry.

The series is also supported by the OSU College of Forestry and the Oregon Forest Resources Institute.

The series – “What’s next: The future of managing for healthy productive forests” – is asking leading thinkers to consider the economic, political, technological and ecological future of forestry and discuss how to meet new challenges that are on the horizon.

Learn to use light for better health

A class on using lighting to create healthier living and working spaces starts from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 30, at the Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way.

The two-week class, Lighting and Simplicity for Happier Living, covers how to create calm and relaxed spaces at home and work with guidelines for applying simplicity for conscious living.

Cancer survivors to be honored

Samaritan Health Services will honor cancer survivors from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at Samaritan Cancer Resource Center, 501 NW Elks Dr., Corvallis; from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 4, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 Santiam Hwy. SE; and from 3 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Samaritan Cancer Resource Center, 400 NW Hickory St., Albany.

Cancer survivors will have the opportunity to connect with resource staff to learn more about programs such as SurvivorFit, That’s My Farmer, and more.

They will also have a chance to engage with fellow survivors, participate in an ArtsCare activity, receive a heartfelt gift and enjoy healthy refreshments.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, May 18, is Arizona chicken or turkey club mini salad, both with spinach Romaine, Popeye potato chowder, whole wheat dinner roll and Mandarin oranges.

The menu on Monday, May 21, is chicken rice bake or macaroni and cheese, broccoli, garden vege-table salad, potato wheat roll and seasonal fresh fruit.

The menu on Tuesday, May 22, is sweet and sour pork with brown rice or spaghetti with meat sauce, green peas, Romaine iceberg salad, garlic roll and frosted chocolate cake.

Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
