Christmas Tree ornaments sought

The Willamette National Forest’s Sweet Home Ranger District has been selected to provide the Capitol Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C. For the 2018 holiday season. The Willamette will provide an additional 75 companion trees to be displayed throughout the capitol.

The National Forest is in search of groups, schools, organizations and individuals that would like to help supply 6,500 small ornaments and 3,500 large ornaments. All ornaments should be completed by Oct. 1.

Ornaments should reflect

Oregon’s cultural heritage, historical events or people and natural resources. Some of the more unique ornaments provided may be selected by the Smithsonian Institute for future displays.

Parents invited to explore school

Sweet Home Charter School invites parents to explore the options for their children for the 2018-19 school year. This meeting will take place at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at the school, 28721 Liberty Road.

The free public school includes a five-day school week with small class sizes and free breakfast and lunch for all students. Openings are available for kindergarten to sixth grade. For more information call (541) 367-1833.

Wiley Creek

celebrates 30 years

Samaritan Wiley Creek Community will celebrate its 20th anniversary with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m., and 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 10, at the assisted living facility, 5050 Mountain Fir St.

There will be guided tours, snacks and door prizes, and an After Hours event with the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce at 5:30 p.m.

Garden talk set at The Lobby May 14

A free gardening talk will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, May 14, at The Lobby, 661 S. Main St. in Lebanon.

The event is sponsored by the Lebanon Garden Club and Linn County Master Gardeners. It is held monthly.

SHHS to dig up capsule May 17

A group of Sweet Home High School staff and students will visit the Sweet Home Wastewater Treatment Plant, 1357 Pleasant Valley Drive, at 8:30 a.m. on May 17 to dig up a time capsule buried there in 1973.

A plaque on the time capsule contains instructions to open it 40 years later, in 2013. City staff realized that the capsule remained at the plant and had yet to be opened 45 years later, and they approached district staff about digging it up and opening it.

Members of the Class of 1973 and persons who attended SHHS that year are invited to join the staff and students in unearthing the time capsule.

Science Pub is May 16 at Barsideous

The South Santiam Watershed Council will host a Science Pub on Wednesday May 16 from 6 to 8 pm at Barsideous Brewing, 644 South Main St., Lebanon. 

 Jeff Clawson will speak about the importance of water quality as it relates to beer brewing in his presentation “Water, the main ingredient in beer.” 

 Clawson is the pilot brewery manager at the Department of Food Science and Technology at OSU.  He installed the original OSU research brewery in 1995 and the two-barrel, five vessel, fully automated brewhouse in 2018. He has been an instructor in Brewing Science since the Fermentation Science Program inception in 1996.

 Bill Bartman, co-owner of Barsideous Brewing, will provide a tour of the facilities following the presentation.

 The event is free and open to the public.

LAFTA to audition for ‘Music Man’

Auditions for “The Music Man,” to be performed this summer by Lebanon Association for Theatre Arts, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 15-17, at Cascades Elementary School, 2163 7th St.

County Spelling Contest May 17

A Spelling Contest for Linn County students is scheduled for Thursday, May 17, to be held at the Lebanon Community School District office, 485 S. 5th St.

Local school districts throughout Linn County are invited to send their top spellers to the contest, which then qualifies spellers to be invited to proceed to the Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship, presented by Oregon Spellers.

The Oregon Statewide Spelling Championship will be held at the Oregon State Fair in Salem on Sept. 1.

All contests are written, and the winners of the state championship will be awarded cash prizes.

Oak Heights to host carnival

Oak Heights Elementary PTC will hold its annual carnival fund-raiser Friday, May 18, and seeks donations of items and gift certificates for the auction. Proceeds will help upgrade playground equipment.

SAFE ham bingo planned May 19

The annual ham bingo benefit for the Sweet Home High School S.A.F.E. Committee and Forestry Club will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 19, in the high school cafeteria.

All night play costs $20 for four cards, or pay .25 per card per game. Every bingo wins a ham, and there will be door prizes and raffle drawings. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. For more information, contact Karla Burcham at (541) 401-3339.

Art journaling class available

An art journaling class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Brownsville Art Center, 255 Main St. Cost is $35 and can be paid at the Art Center Friday thru Saturday, or register online at brownsvilleart.org.

Local artist Wendy Hoffman will show several techniques for journaling about one’s life and experiences using pictures, color, painting, collage, words, etc. This class will provide the opportunity to create several journal pages using pen and ink, waercolors, stencils, distress oxide, and more to create backgrounds for collage, and will finish with some writing prompts.

Extension offers two scholarships

The Linn County Extension Service offers two LCEA Legacy Scholarships of $1,000 annually. The scholarship is based on residency in the geographical areas served by Linn County Extension, the applicant’s financial need, GPA of 2.75 or higher, involvement in 4-H or other Extension programs, and community involvement and/or work experience.

Board to consider SHJH contractor

At 6 p.m. on May 21 in the Sweet Home School District’s Board Room, 1920 Long St, the Sweet Home School Board will hold a special meeting to consider approval of a recommended contractor for the Sweet Home Junior High School remodel.

The contractor will operate under the construction manager-general contractor model, where the contractor is involved in the design phase, allowing flexibility and the ability to withdraw portions of the project and make adjustments “on the fly” based on changing information and prices.

Starker sponsors forest future talk

Constance Harrington, research forester with the U.S. Forest Service, will address “How should we manage our forests in the face of uncertainty? What we know and what we don’t know about how trees respond to climate,” in the final installation of the Starker Lectures at 3:30 p.m. on May 23 at Oregon State University.

All lectures are free and open to the public and will be held in the C&E Hall of the LaSells Stewart Center on  the OSU campus.

The Starker Lecture Series is sponsored by the Starker family in memory of T.J. and Bruce Starker, prominent leaders in the development of the Oregon forest products industry. The series is also supported by the OSU College of Forestry and the Oregon Forest Resources Institute.

The series – “What’s next: The future of managing for healthy productive forests” – is asking leading thinkers to consider the economic, political, technological and ecological future of forestry and discuss how to meet new challenges that are on the horizon.

Love Thy Neighbor bing is Thursday

Love Thy Neighbor Services holds a Bingo Night fund-raiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at Home Sweet Home Cafe, 1333 Main St.

A limited menu will be available. Proceeds will benefit the organization’s outreach efforts, which include a youth program, outdoor school and a community garden.

Services available for disabled kids

The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires schools to make available special education to children kindergarten through age 21 who are eligible for special services.

Residents are encouraged to contact their local school if they know of any youngster who could benefit from special help, or any children who are not in school but may have a disability.

Children from birth to age 5 with physical, developmental, hearing, vision, or speech and language difficulties are eligible for services that may be reached by contacting Linn Benton Early Intervention Program at (541) 753-1202, ext. 106.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, May 11, is chicken breast supreme or sliced ham with raisin sauce, with whipped sweet potatoes, grean peas and onions, multigrain bread and cherry crisp.

The menu on Monday, May 14, is white bean chicken chili or lasagna roll-up, with green beans, spinach Romaine salad, cornmeal roll and bananna pudding.

The menu on Tuesday, May 15, iis breaded baked fish with Tartar sauce or Swiss-style beef patty with creamed potatoes, broccoli, oatmeal bread and mixed fruit.

Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
