Local residents can win prizes by finding ways to economize on their travel in the Get There Challenge for the Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties, which runs through Oct. 21.
Participants are encouraged to get active, save money, and track their trips for a chance to win prizes. Participants track trips by bike, bus, walking, rolling, carpool/vanpool, and teleworking at GetThereOregon.org for chances to win prizes that include an overnight trip to Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, one $1,000 Bike Friday gift card, two $500 cash cards, and more.

Ceramics clearance
bargains at LBCC
Linn-Benton Community College will hold a ceramics clearance sale from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 16 and 17, in the college’s Benton Center Student Lounge, 757 NW Polk Ave. in Corvallis.
The sale will include donated ceramic pieces from local artists, at low prices. Proceeds will support the ceramics center.

Haunted House,
tour this weekend
A Haunted House Ghost Tour, with stops at Haunted City Hall and other scary spots around town, will be held Oct. 18-19.
Various historical personalities, such as Klondike Kate, will come to life in the Haunted House Ghost Tour, which will include re-enactments of scenes taken from the pages of local history. Linn Shuttle is providing transportation to the 10 stops.
The old City Hall, 1140 12th Ave., will provide activities for children 12 and younger on the top floor. Admission is free, with games, candy, trick-or-treating and other fun activities.
The basement, where the city Police Department and jail were once located, will house the Haunted House. Children must be at least 12 to enter, unless they have parental permission and are accompanied by an adult. Admission to the haunted house is $8.
The Ghost Tour runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and the Haunted City Hall runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. bothboth Friday and Saturday. A ticket for the ghost tour is $10. RSVPs are requested for the tour because space is limited.

Walk in the garden
at Veterans Home
The Oregon Veterans Home in Lebanon invites interested persons to join in a leisurely garden tour and talk from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 at 600 N. 5th St.
Bring along your favorite morning beverage and plant questions. There will be a garden topic lesson and a walk around the various beds, looking at plant growth, disease and/or any pests.

Mason bee care class on Oct. 19
Oregon State Extension Service will offer a mason bee cocoon care class from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 19, at Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St.
Learn the latest recommendations for harvesting, cleaning and storing cocoons. You will likely see examples of pests, mold and a fungus that affects the cocoons. If you do not service your cocoons, your site will likely be dead within one to three years.
Survival rate of blue orchard mason bees can improve significantly with proper care.
The class is free, but registration is required; space is limited to 15 people. Bring your filled tubes, teasel and laminated blocks. Those who do not have tubes or blocks can come to learn, and help others harvest their cocoons.
Bee houses, tubes/liners, blocks and pollinator related books will be for sale at these classes. Other offerings of this class are held in surrounding communities. Lacemakers invite
guests Saturday
Oregon Trail Lacemakers invites guests to its monthly meeting, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at Willamette Oaks Retirement Living, 455 Alexander Loop, north of the Valley River Center in Eugene.
Participants make lace by hand, particularly bobbin lace. Self-paced classes are available.

Gardeners to talk
landscape design
The Lebanon Garden Club meets at noon on the third Monday of every month. The next meetings will be Oct. 21 and Nov. 18 at Santiam Place, 139 S. Main St., Lebanon.
The October meeting includes discussion about designing landscapes with native plants, and November’s will include a talk about hummingbirds. Club members and guests enjoy a light lunch and refreshments.

Kilted Man to
perform in SH
Matthew Gurnsey, the Kilted Man, will perform traditional Irish and Scottish music at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Sunshine Industries, 1333 Clark Mill Road.
Gurnsey mixes wit and finesse to sweep audiences along with tales of wayward voyages, unrequited love and colorful Irish tales. He performs on rare Celtic instruments including the concertina, bodhran, bones, mandolin, penny whistle and bowed psaltery.
Tickets are $10, with children 10 and under free. Refreshments will be available.
The performance is sponsored by the Sweet Home Rotary Club, with proceeds going to scholarships for Sweet Home High School students.
Cooking classes
for kids, families
Learn to cook together as a family at free classes offered from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 23 and 30 and Nov. 6 and 13, at the Sweet Home High School FACS classroom, 1641 Long St.
Adults and children will learn to work together to create healthy meals to take home and eat after each class.
The Culinary Healthy Education and Fitness (CHEF) Program is offered by Samaritan Health Services and the Oregon State University Linus Pauling Institute.
A kids-only class will also be offered, for fifth- through eighth-graders, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 30, and Nov. 6, 13 and 20, at the same location. Young participants will learn to create such dishes as pesto pasta, griddle fajitas, veggie spring rolls and pad Thai, breakfast burritos, smoothies, mango lassi and more.

Learn about sleep
in free class Oct. 24
Learn about the importance of sleep and how to benefit from it in a free session offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St., Lebanon.
The program is offered by Oregon State University Extension Service and is open to the public. Learn about the basics of sleep, how to assess sleep patterns and discuss tips and strategies for sleeping better.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, Oct. 18, is turkey a la king or braised beef tips, whipped potatoes, cauliflower and carrots, sunflower seed roll and applesauce gingerbread cake.
The menu on Monday, Oct. 21, is pork choppie with gravy or Caribbean spice chicken, whipped sweet potatoes, broccoli, wheat bread and spiced peaches.
The menu on Tuesday, Oct. 22, is chicken Brunswick stew or diced pork and penne pasta, country trio vegetables, spinach romaine salad, oatmeal roll and butterscotch bar.
Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
