Pencil, wood art on
display at gallery
Colored pencil artist Rachael Oehler and wood-turner J.J. Jones are the featured artists Oct. 29 through Nov. 22 at Gallery Calapooia, 222 First Ave. W. in downtown Albany.
The First Friday reception, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 1, will feature the work of Oehler and Jones as well as 19 other mid-valley artists. Refreshments, beer and wine will be served. Musical duo Rose and Thistle will be on hand to provide music.
A former teacher, YMCA director, and realtor, Jones has been turning wood since 1985. He has three wood lathes and makes a wide range of items from small vases and pens to larger vessels, platters and pieces up to five feet in length. Jones looks for downed or thinned trees for his wood turning projects. Especially prized are burls, unique patterns in the wood which are caused by injury, illness or insect infestations in the tree.
Oehler’s award-winning colored pencil artwork is largely born of the rolling hills, friendly faces and natural beauty of the Willamette Valley, as well as from her travels. A love for nature, portraiture, and the Northwest landscape led her to pursue art and biology at Western Oregon University. While she developed her understanding of color and glazing as an oil painter, colored pencil is her chosen medium for precision and luminous layers of color. .
